The French are on to something though: Every few decades some puritanical fever grips the Anglo-Americans and it becomes a thought crime to utter one word against their idee fixe. Witch hunts are then launched to root out the heretics du jour.

It's still a term that has currency. Both countries still have a strong puritanical approach to life, it used to be about religion, but these days it manifests itself in their "social justice" crusades and need to bring "liberal democracy" to the benighted parts of the world. When you are not from either the UK or USA as I am, it stands out a mile. You guys love smoking out les hérétiques du jour
