The article didn't say anything about addiction. In fact it says "In his later years, his only substance was marijuana." It's easy to OD on painkillers, especially when you get old and everything hurts.

Petty is the poster boy for the American opioid problem. Rich or poor, depression, and the health problems associated with aging - it can happen to anyone. Although there has been some press about the issue, it has been mostly ignored by the mainstream media because it mostly affects lower to middle class whites.

I found Warren Zanes' book Petty: The Biography.....both a fascinating and harrowing read, did Petty ever really quit? Or just replace one opioid with another?...

Growing up in California we loved his music...the dude from Louisiana moved to L.A. and became a favorite. Remember lots of good times on the beach, bonfires, and Petty......He lived a good life, gave alot of folks happiness through his talent and however he went is not overshadowed by the way he lived. He had me from the first album with American Girl and adapted well through the next few decades!

RIP Tom

Goes with the territory. Does not detract from the greatness of the man. We all have our addictions, to an extent. They just get more publicised when you live or die under the glare of the public.

What the hell is an "accidental overdose"? That term is such a euphemism.

Valium and Xanax can be taken by a handful without overdosing but when mixed with narcotics especially narcotics like fentanyl, some of which were no doubt illegal, is a recipe for certain death. Accidental is speculative.

He chose to take them, therefor the word accidental is not applicable.

Sure it is. If one isn’t intending to kill themself, then an overdose would be accidental.

May be these pain killer ought to be more tightly regulated, in the UK at the chemist they won't let buy more than 1 packet of paracetamol, and the stronger stuff is on prescription only. if this the case in the USA should a doctor be monitoring what some one is prescribed and takes?

They would have come from different doctors or bought online so the question isn't whether Petty intended to take them but did he know that they were lethal in combination ? In that much pain and you aren't thinking straight. At least it is a better way to go than emphysema. RIP.
