Maybe Abe should nominate Putin for the Nobel Peace Prize if he wants to get faster results.

no chance Abe's gov will recognize the results of WWII

Abe doesn't care about anything except his ratings.

Japan might as well table the peace treaty and move forward with life. Putin is just toying with Abe and has no intention of making any peace treaty.

When your best friend is best friend with the enemy do what you do and in 50 years people will honour you. Or make up euphemisms for his reign. High profile little substance. Still waiting for the shiney glowing, irredentist, leader.

Dear Abe,

I know you care about this issue, I know your father tried hard, even on his last days alive to succeed and move forward on this issue...

But that will never happen, in order to take those Islands back you need to hold more cards in your hand, right now Putin Holds all of them.

In your rush to get a quick aggrement you will lose most of the territorial claims, while Russia will be richer and stronger using your money and business.

Abe has demonstrated throughout this whole process that while he may be adept within the Japanese political sphere he has little grasp or ability when it comes to international politics nor does he or his team have the necessary skills for effective negotiations.

Russia wants a peace treaty, it is a “nice to have” but ultimately not that important to them where as Abe has signalled how important it is to him, which leaves him effectively with nothing to play with. Possession of the islands has a military and political benefit to Russia (plus an inmate disinclination of Russian rulers throughout history to let go of any land they grab), as well as providing leverage when ever they want it with Japanese leaders ergo the comments suddenly tying the issue to the intermediate range missile treaty.

In reality unless Abe gives them all they want they will continue to stone wall him (which Russia has shown its self to be historically very good at), and if he does then he still won’t get the islands back!

What a mess. I don’t know enough to criticize Abe, but I do know that in 1989, all the Russian communists didn’t just die off. I don’t trust Putin any further than I could throw him in a judo match. I hope Japan gets all the islands back!

Dear Abe and Japan:

You were a huge part of WWII and not in a good way. Stop crying about land you lost. If you never decided you were going to help take over the world with your friends Germany and Italy, you would still have all your lands, and wouldn't have had lost all those people to the two atomic bombings, which you might want to finally admit was your own doing.

Russia is in the drivers seat and with the principle that "possession is nine tenths of the law" on their side they can afford to wait for an opportune time to deal.
