Good story. Back then--and now--few things were worse than a ship or plane lost at sea with all hands. It was terrible for families who would ever know their loved ones fates or where they might be resting. It's good to research the ship and bring to life the seamen lost on the Abner Read. Humans are never entirely lost if they are remembered.

That was quite a ship! So many were torn apart but rebuilt and sent back, often with the same crew. am happy this may bring conclusion for survivors and their relatives.
One quibble: the Aleutian Islands do not harbor coral, and thus the stern cannot be "coral-encrusted." It is marine-life encrusted.

I'm sure the excitement of finding their target overwhelmed them and died down quickly once they remembered the dead. I wouldn't read too much into it.

Let them rest in peace. Please, don't disturb them. R.I.P.
