If the Olympics does gets cancelled, if this outbreak gets even bigger. (and tightly so as public health would be more important). I wonder when they would reschedule the games.. Later in 2020? Next year? Because the outcry if the games were canceled all together would be huge due to the amount of public money that has been spent.

Though these are all just questions at the big 'if'. Because I'm sure that the games will go ahead as planned and hopefully without any additional risk to the athletes, workers and spectators.

Why do these foolish people persist in taking selfies wearing a face mask?

There is no way Japan will cancel the olympics. It doesn’t matter how bad the spread of this disease is they will just ‘urge’ everybody to wear face masks and carry on regardless.

I’m reasonably confident this outbreak will be contained long before then but if the Olympics needs to be canceled then it needs to be canceled. Public safety should come first.

"We have never discussed cancelling the games," Tokyo organizers said

WTF, and why not?

Move the games to the cooler weather September and you have solved potential two issues!

give it a month or 2.

The games will happen, with or without people.

Demand for Olympic tickets in Japan is unprecedented, exceeding supply by at least 10 times.

So you see ? In case that many/most gaikoku spectators cancel, tickets can be resold immediately to Japanese on waiting list. They just need to ask them to wear the colors of different nations.

will review any countermeasures that may be necessary."

Sure, if some can't make the trip, Softbank could provide robots that carry a screen showing a video of the athletes they replace.

Or we could all just stop exaggerating the threat and danger fro the new virus. A very small number have died, mainly the old, infirm and those with underlying health conditions. Just like the flu virus that kills many every year without panic.

Take off the useless mask--at least so the kid can see his mom and for the photo.

I'm sure all the agencies are working to contain this outbreak and treat patients as well as develop a new immunization ASAP. The medical supply companies are already working overtime to supply masks to help with the preventative measures. Many areas have already sold out current supplies.

Just what the naysayers want.

Like Brexit, the illness will soon pass.

Relax, folks.

And, they do very little (if anything) to stop the sirens of viruses.

Oh great, another big overreaction considering a pandemic. Man, I’m old enough to remember the whole foot and mouth disease scare, as well as the whole Y2K hysteria I might add. Let me tell you, I’m really getting sick and tired of these big overreactions every time something like this comes up.

And let me tell you, no, the Olympics will not be canceled. And for those who say that it should, keep in mind of all the billions of dollars that have been sunk into these games. It would have to take something very, very monumental, in order for the Olympics to be canceled. And at least Tokyo, and Japan as a whole, will get billions of dollars back with all the tourism money.

Why are people always telling other people what they can and can't wear? Wearing a mask is simply part of the culture, and even if it is not totally effective against all germs, it gives the wearer a sense that at least they are trying to do something to protect themselves. The arrogance of some people.

Meanwhile, the South Koreans continue to flog a dead horse, by remaining absolutely convinced that their athletes will be served radioactive meals from Fukushima-grown produce. Of course there's nothing to stop them from assigning their own caterer at the games, so the only explanation for this stance is that they want to rain on Japan's parade come July.

Yen. We call it Yen, here in Japan.

But yes, otherwise you are correct. The Games will go on.

Someone trying to stir up anti-korean sentiment.

Again.

This.

2,000 people have died from this disease in China, and the world as we know it is coming to a screeching halt.

Meanwhile, 8,000 people have died from the flu in the US since October and nobody cares.

unfortunately unlike the virus , Brexit will be felt for many years to come, auto sector already down 14% from last year and they haven't even negotiated a trade deal yet. when those tariffs kick in the pandemic will just get started.

the flue is more contagious and the mortality rate higher than this virus

Should Japan choose to go forward, and should the virus get worse it won’t matter what Japan or the Olympic committee wants if the atheletes back out that seals the fate of the start or the end of the games.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Regardless of whether the outbreak will result in cancellation of the games. What it asks is "are containment measures sufficient?".

Abe/Japan has been at least 1 to 2 steps behind USA, heck even Taiwan and Singapore. One would think it's because of China/Japan economic dependencies. BUT, if it gets worse, there might not be an economy left to balance.

IMHO, Abe is burning the candle at both ends hoping a strong wind will come along and blow one end out. He's not willing to do by himself at this stage.

JCosplay... which other Olympic Games has made money from tourism or any other means?

I’ll help you..... it’s NONE!

Part of the bidding process is to talk up the “windfall of cash to land on tax payers laps” but it never has happened and will not happen in Tokyo.

A huge waste of public money.
