Better headline:

"23% of Japanese Firms Discriminate in Pay Against Foreign Workers"

17 ( +17 / -0 )

Right, because the same 77% of Japanese firms are also underpaying the Japanese workforce as well, so I guess from their perspective, no discrimination is taking place.

Salary is only part of it. Benefits often differ greatly

Nearly 80 percent of companies in Japan pay their foreign employees equal or higher wages compared to their Japanese staff as a wide range of industries struggle to address a labor shortage, a think tank survey shows.

Geez, just how gullible do you think people are here? Right, this isnt about the foreign community, this survey was conducted to give something the government to point to that "proves" foreign workers in Japan are treated as well as, or better than their Japanese counterparts.

I asked a Japanese worker that he must be a great help for them because of his powerful strong body. But he denied my comment. He said the guy does not work as hard as other Japanese workers adding they do not have a custom of working hard.

Probably means the foreign worker didnt go out drinking with them after work, so they have to find some way to critisize him to the general public, but give the guy a pat on the back everyday for a job well done!

Believe it or not, I have seen it done, and experienced it as well. Some will praise you to high heaven in front of you, all the while they have their knife ready to stab you in the back after you turn around!

I am not suggesting ALL do it, but it is not uncommon here!

"...they have their knife ready to stab you in the back after you turn around!"

Yubaru, very well stated; I have experienced this exactly as you said.

The discrimination goes far beyond their salary.

Regarding training for foreign workers, 55.5 percent said they are not doing anything, and 29.4 percent offer some form of training programs.

Which means that nearly 85% of the companies that do in fact hire foreign workers offer limited or no training!

After all the fudging of figures this is ment to be believed.

Now, 77% say they pay foreigners and Japanese the same...

but 41% say they don't have any Japanese on payroll.

So the reality is, only 36% pay foreign and Japanese workers the same, while 18% pay them less or just the pittance minimum wage.

So in other words, 1 in 3 are guilty of paying foreign workers less, once you take out those who just don't hire foreigners at all.

The institute's findings are based on responses between Jan. 26 and Feb. 22 from 1,039 companies across the nation of which 41.0 percent currently employ foreigners.

So, this data, that was collected to roughly 600 companies that actually employee foreign workers in Japan, will be used as "proof" for the entire country?

Out of all the companies, roughly 600 here, actually have more than ONE foreign worker, actually working as a full-time salaried employee? How large were the corporations and businesses? What industries were focused on for the survey?

How many of the 600 or so companies only have a "token" window dressing "gaijin"?

@Bullfighter

the wage for checkout staff in the UK is around 10 uk pounds an hour much higher than here by around 500 yen or thereabouts-much more than Japan.

I see many (2019) foreigners eg Poles,Sri Lankans, etc doing counter work and in hotels, hospitals and gas stations in the UK-levels of English vary. However, wages do not not ie the foreigners receive at least the same as the natives and are looked upon as a resource to be developed not to be sent back to their countries when their limited visas expire.

Farm work has not been the choice of native Brits for a long time as is the case in Japan-foreigners are its backbone as they will be in the countryside here but any chance of talent being nurtured is low because of strict visa conditions.

The US and the UK will attract talent because of a policy of openess and equitableness.

Accordingly, many foreigners will become naturalized in the US and the UK but what are the benefits of doing so here?

@Schopenhauer

Referring to Sri Lanka as Ceylon is like calling Russia "Soviet Union", America "13 colonies", Germany "3rd reich", India "British Raj" or Czechia "Czechoslovakia". How can English people be physically in the 21st century, but mentally in the 20th century is something absolutely fascinating to me... at first, but once you take a look at their average newspaper stand, the why and how become clear. I wanna say more, but i know my comment is already about to get deleted, so.. eh.

77% of Japanese firms say foreign workers not discriminated in pay

So... 77% of Japanese firms don’t employ foreign workers?

I got hired by a Japanese company. No bonus. No extra pay for business trips.

@Bugle Boy of Company B - I got hired by a Japanese company. No bonus. No extra pay for business trips.

As I stated in my previous post, the discrimination goes far beyond salary rates.

Did 23 per cent admit that they did discriminate???

3 ( +3 / -0 )

So says a survey where there is no actual proof offered, only opinions.

I wish it were possible to organize a nationwide walkout of all foreign workers in Japan (and all thinking to come here). Let Japan see just how desperate situation they are in without us.

"77% of Japanese firms "SAY" foreign workers not discriminated in pay"

What they "SAY" and what they actually DO are two different things. Put the CEOs in detention until they sign a confession of cheating foreign workers.

If the Yen depreciates versus other currencies within the Region, I wonder, will we then see an exodus of low paid workers going elsewhere ?

You might have to pay the foreigners more if, say, they have skills that are required and hard to find in Japan. For example, if your customer base is outside of Japan, Company S (insert major Japanese electronics manufacturer) might need to understand its customers a little better.... Also, many websites here are a mess

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

the ones with actually needed skills payed higher... the ones with similar skills.. why would they be payed similar or above locals...?

The other day, I came across a scene at my danchi, a foreign worker was working among Japanese workers. They were movers. The foreign worker was from Ceylon and he was bigger than other Japanese in physique. Seeing his muscular body, I asked a Japanese worker that he must be a great help for them because of his powerful strong body. But he denied my comment. He said the guy does not work as hard as other Japanese workers adding they do not have a custom of working hard. I imagined they are so because of their life under high temperatures at home. I do not know he is paid the same or lower than Japanese workers.
