While air travel between the countries has fallen off of a cliff, most Chinese factories are still online, so there's going to be demand for air freight between China/HK and Japan. Not as strange of a decision as it might seem at first.

CX has also grounded half their fleet and requested 20,000 employees worldwide to take voluntary unpaid leave. YET -as they had just published-, they are still posting a small profit!

Maybe in a thousand years Japanese carriers will learn how that is possible.

Apart from impact it will have on workers, only sensible thing to do is to adjust according to demand I think.

We do not want to see near empty flight burning fuel for the sake of flying them.

It's not time for business competitions when it comes to time like this. Would it be nice if airlines can somehow talk together beyond their 'alliance' and consolidate passengers (and cargo) to destinations?

Cathay Pacific is the worlds's best airline IMHO. I love their Business Class, it is really very good. I hope that they can come through the present crisis in reasonable good shape. I know they are a major freight airline and so good luck to them.
