If you ever want to know what new product introductions have failed disastrously, Donki's the place. It's a clearinghouse for unloved products. Of course you can also get deals on ordinary goods.

Have never seen the appeal but it's hardly surprising given recent trends in J-retail. The only places booming these days are Daiso, Konan and the like, purveyors of the same cheap imports. Meanwhile, mid-range retailers like Daiei or Izumiya are getting plowed under by the AEON monopoly who immediately remodel stores with far less affordable choices and a smaller range of products. The marketplace seems to be increasingly stratified. Either junk or outrageously pricy shops.

Donki is like Japans knock off version of Walmart, and like many knock offs, it is usually lower quality. That isn't saying much since it is Walmart.

Yeah, we lost the Daiei in Meguro awhile ago. I didn't really like the renovations by Aeon, and it does seems to be lacking compared to Daiei. The lost of the middle class is always a bad sign of the economy. The supermarkets are becoming either cheaper conbini stores or expensive department stores.

If I was visiting tourist, teenager, or young adult/college student then I would love Donki. Being an adult that has become more conscious about what goes in my body and family man, it is hard to find what I need there. That means going to either lower-end or high-end supermarkets because the mid-range is being pushed out. It also means spending more time shopping because you need to go to both types of supermarkets for different items.

Well contrary to those above, I like Donki.

A fantastic store filler with EVERYTHING and many times the only place 24 hours that u can literally buy a TV, Playstation, silverware, bed sheets, hey even a pet!

Sometimes at 3am Donki is the hero.

The same things that are elsewhere are in Donki too, so the “junk” claims are interesting, but I suppose its all junk to some.

Thanks to the Asian tourists that stock up like it's ww3!

I've been to a few Mega Don Quijote which is more like a hypermarket with supermarket and I've found their food offerings to be competitive and well-sized, and their snack selection is also well-priced and also sell some foreign snacks. It's a place that's just fun to wander around and see all the interesting things they sell.

According to my former brother-in-law who knows about such things, Donki is backed by those people with not enough fingers.

I think Donki relies on impulse buying for much of its turnover. Its jam-packed shops and plethora of tacky goods give the impression of low prices, but I have consistently been able to find identical items -- even toys -- from Amazon Japan at considerably lower prices than Donki. Aside from items like baked goods and fresh foods, I seldom purchase anything any more without first comparing with the price at Amazon.

I agree on the quality of the food they sell here. A lot of junk in big boxes. Fruits or veggies are often sold not tasty at all, even if look fresh. Last year apples or oranges are just examples that are still sold now - what is the pint to keep them that long in warehouse since harvesting and charing more than 150 yen a piece? Things like bread or cheese are very low quality too.

Amazing as its sells nothing but junk

I don't think that's entirely correct. I think it's fair to say mostly junk, but they have some top-level goods in there as well, particularly handbags and alcohol.

Amazing as its sells nothing but junk really, a cross section of the world we live in.
