Exactly!

the buyers of the export products are paying a fraction of what we pay here in Japan for apples, strawberries... why can i buy Japanese strawberries in Hongkong at less than half price from Japan?

Normally, you can't. They are either different types or grades of strawberries, or perhaps not even Japanese strawberries at all. Or the importer bought too many strawberries and has to get rid of them.

I've seen the same Japanese hair gel in HK sell for half the Japanese price. Consumers in Japan are getting screwed, especially when it comes to fruit and veg.

Back home, I can get a big bag of Brussel sprouts for about 60 yen. Here, six measly sprouts will cost you 200 yen.

Some markets including China and Hong Kong, however, continue to restrict food imports from Japan's Fukushima Prefecture and surrounding areas following the 2011 nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi plant. The Japanese government plans to keep calling for an easing of the ban.

Could it be that the levels of radioactivity in food products is increasing?

Radioactivity accumulates in the environment and the damaged reactors are not secure, continue to leak radioactivity into the sea off Fukushima and build up!

The governments of some countries are not willing to expose their citizens to products that the Japanese are not willing to consume.

So, in light of record exports can LDP stop/ reduce its vote buying farmer subsidies ?...no, of course not.

As the rural population continues to decline, the historic rural gerrymander isn't worth much anymore. Further, the LDP saw this coming more than 20 years ago and intensified urban/suburban canvassing.

It is possible in some countries that the retail price may be lower on apples, but that may be due to lower overhead costs such as rent, transportation and labor, less packaging by the local wholesalers and supermarkets (see the comments above) and weekly price swings.

Hair gel is not an agriculture, forestry or fisheries export. Completely different logistics and economics, and not at all relevant. You can buy lots of Japanese things cheaper overseas. Fresh produce is normally not one of them.

So far as brussel sprouts, fresh gobo will cost you an arm and a leg in many places outside Japan. Because most people don't eat it, so only a few specialty farmers would grow it. Kind of like brussel sprouts here.

How much of the exports come from the highly questionable area of offshore the denpatsu Fukushima sites?

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

First, I am very happy to hear this export issue. No offense but , why does Japan export food products from Fukushima when Japanese do not buy such products themselves ???. There are other things that will not harm the human body that can be produced in Fukushima, correct ???.
