This is an open secret in the US. But Japanese never heard of it.

Trump is correct about the trade imbalance, the US has an unsustainable debt because of it and no steel industry. America could balance its trade deficits tomorrow and itd still be in huge debt, spending 600billion on its military , $1 trillion in car loans ,massive credit card debts, America problem is basically over spend on stuff it cant afford to repay and struggles just to pay the interest on its loans the biggest lenders being Japan and China. Giving huge tax breaks it cant afford to sustain and not forcing big American companies to pay its fair share in taxes. Until America fixes all those problems it deficit will continue to rise.

WTFJapan, your right, I live in Derby and Toyota car plant is near me, there is lots of speculation over if they will upsticks and move to Europe, if and when brexit common in to play, it all depends on what the government can negotiate on free trade, or no free trade. As for these big companies they don't give two hoots about the work force, its all about the cash I am sorry to say.

@Frank Thornton: You are not wrong, part of the problem is that US cars are really not made for Japan they are made for US roads and drivers and no one wants them.

Japanese car makers would close the doors to their American plants in a heartbeat if the the yen could be kept perpetually weak. ironically it was perpetually weak and probably would be still to a lesser extent today if America didnt force the Plaza accord down Japans throat in the 80s, Japan has never really recovered from that. Thankfully for the Chinese America cant do this to them also.

But that's OK according to your post on the other thread. Japan has almost zero unemployment and a decreasing population and is also a world-leader in robots, so we don't need to create jobs for Japanese people!

Ever heard of robots? Japan is the World Leader in them, and they are used in auto-making, restautant, farming, medical operations and even are the reseption staff in some hotel here. You dont need the assembly workers like 30 years ago.

What trump wants is all Japanese brand automobiles on American roads were made in US 100%, not a single one is imported and none of the auto's parts were imported!

Japan doesn’t build cars in America out of the kindness of it’s heart, but to make money. After the Plaza Accord in 1986, Japan couldn’t no longer manipulate the yen to keep it cheap.

With a huge surplus of dollars in Japan, and little yen outside, the yen strengthened and the dollar weakened. Prices of Japanese cars increased, which decreased sales, while the sales of American cars increased.

Building car factories in America allows Japanese cars to be competitively priced whichever way the yen or dollar go. In 2011, when the yen was trading around 75 to the dollar, Carlos Ghosn, Chairman of Nissan, floated the idea od importing US-made Japanese cars to take advantage of the disparity in currency values. This was met with howels of opposition within the Japanese car industry, even though doing what Ghosn suggested was good business sense, and would have benefited US workers and Japanese car buyers.

The JD Power survey is US-based, so the results aren’t directly transferable to Australia because we source some of our imports from different plants.

The US Toyota Camry, for example is made in Kentucky, while ours is built in Japan.

However, that not happening in Japan is not a Japanese automaker problem. Trump is barking up the wrong tree. It is the US automaker that is not willing to invest and blaming a "closed market" for its own failure to crack the Japanese market. I often hear of these "invisible tariffs" that the US cars face in Japan. I myself drive a Jeep that I bought brand new here in Japan in 2014. I would like to know what difficulties and tariffs I'm paying for. Sorry if I misunderstood your comment. Not meaning to attack you.

Multi-national companies have to pay taxation the country they have the plants, and less taxation to the original country, an easy way the strategy of US Trump to win to get the money and JP Abe Abenomics to lose money from taxation. Those big companies to implant industry in another country cost billions of dollars/yens and they can reduce pay off annual taxation to the original country, let's see if Abenomics works to get money from those US originals SNS and oil companies...I don't think anything fairness in this world of finance spots concentrated in Wall Street, following Americanized economy is very tricky!

Not defending Trump but I think that is his point, Japanese automakers have grown fat in the US, and while US cars a complete rubbish, that has not happened in Japan.

Exactly. The jobs provided indirectly, probably outnumber the jobs, directly. Have a look at when Toyota, Holden and Ford closed down all their factories in Aus..... A lot of the smaller companies that made things like bolts for the assembly plants had to try find other customers, or fold.

(Not just the wealthy).

I lived through the unfortunate years of 'Japan bashing' in America, the 80's and early 90's, where people were destroying Japanese cars on the streets ("Buy American" was a rallying cry).

Nice to see Japanese automakers now building plants in the U.S. and giving Americans the chance to earn a great living. That they are considering building auto plants in Michigan would have been unfathomable several decades ago.

Someone has to show Trump what the numbers would be like if those plants weren't in the US. Yeah it's a moot point, but having all those plants and workers in the US benefits both sides, but Trump is too blind to see it and is only focused on the deficit number!
