I can already see the tabloids headline: ''Japan declares war on BRITANNIA!!".

Lets not hide behind political or economic the delusional mask of the facts here......

The Government of Japan has no place to threaten the Government of he UK to definite a dereliction of/to a democratic mandate to leave the European Union.

JP businesses in UK have to diversify or leave. It is a s simple as that.

JP businesses in UK have to diversify or leave. It is a s simple as that.

Why are you talking like they are doing you a favor by investing in your country? Wasn't England the one begging Toyota not to leave, and for Japan to invest more in their country? This delusional syndrome is something i can never understand no matter how hard i try.

-1 ( +8 / -9 )

There is no "democratic mandate" for No-Deal Brexit, so Japan cannot interfere with one. People simply voted to "leave". There were no specifics.

Kono is not saying don't leave the EU, only don't do it in the most disruptive way possible. Trump has commented on who should be the next British PM, which is far more interference.

A bit gauling even for a Japanese PM.

IMHO, an apology is in order, unless he wants to clarify how his 'warning' is not meddling in other people's politics.

If he had to convey Japan's concerns it should have been done privately.

Japanese banks/institutions did not invest for any form of a charitable outcome. Well we could the tax ramifications.

It's for profit.

I have a successful business in the UK, with a diverse work force complementary to sister companies in Nagoya and Kochi, and soon a subsidiary in Frankfurt (Germany).

The political huff puff has to be weighted against the consequence/reality of complete a UK regulatory diversification, and economic model.

we could debate the tax ramifications......spot the missing word

Japanese banks/institutions did not invest for any form of a charitable outcome. Well we could (debate) the tax ramifications

Isn't the debate done and dusted, and a referendum decided the outcome?

Kohakuebisu so politically Japan should join the European Union.

Kohakuebisu please explain the economic geopolitical implications. With Japan's membership EU could be renamed the Global Union.

The GU ….....

Of course Japan would have to comply to GU rules bases Treaty Law?

Kohakuebisu, what do you think that would imply both politicly/economically?

I'm afraid that Japan will have zero sway in this discussion, for if the British public ignored the IMF, the EU, President Obama and their own PM, David Cameron, they'll be unlikely to listen now.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

That is a fair point Sh1mon M4sada, however the legislative feasibility cannot succumb to a second referendum. The process would be subject to parliament, and a host of challenges from both houses.

The process would be subject to parliament, and a host of challenges from both houses.

It's all political machinations now, and it's a fair risk for all businesses. I worked for a Japanese joint venture that lost tenders/contracts in Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam (all to Chinese companies). Political machinations is part and parcel of doing business in a foreign land IMO.

Sh1mon M4sada

It is not the end of the world for Japans Car manufacturing supply chains median/long term.

In all honesty Short term without the EU Japan EPA without doubt economically unpleasant. An understatement in conjection to the costs involved.

Wise words from Kono Sensei. Going forward I see smooth relations between Japan and UK. When Johnson's starts to rule, a swift deal will be done with EU, that will please Japan. He is called "British Trump" for a reason !

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

Funny how the japanese establishment muppets don't like being told what to do but waste no time butting in when they can.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

some comment from Reddit:

"That warning does carry some weight. And now it's out there, so the UK can't go pikachu when they leave"

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Meh..... completely meaningless diplomatic words.

Does anyone think that whatever Japan thinks or says about Brexit will have ANY impact on what the UK does with respect to Brexit?????

The UK will do what it is going to do and the words of the Foreign Minister of Japan will have absolutely no impact on that!!!

1 ( +2 / -1 )

No deal....NOW!

2 ( +3 / -1 )

I can already see the tabloids headline: ''Japan declares war on BRITANNIA!!".

Nah. Very few UK people even know who he is. Tabloids have more important issues like football players in threesomes or Pippa Middleton’s arse.

Come to think of it, very few Japanese people know who he is.

The Government of Japan has no place to threaten the Government of he UK

When did Kono threaten?

"Please, no no-deal Brexit," is a begging,

"Some companies are already starting to move their operations to other places in Europe." is a fact.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Mr Kono, I like yr style very much but I think it is time, U help Britain instead of trump ameriica , who is sucking all Japanese hard-earned money. We are tax payers and we think it is time to say NO to trump america. The world war ii is over for 74 years. Why are We the Japanese still paying for 74 years ???.It is time we help Britain.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I don't have a horse in Brexit... but damn, are these two clowns are the best for the job now? the future of UK certainly isn't looking rosy

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Definitely Japan cannot dictate or threaten any other country's course of action. However, it could indicate and express its concerns.

However in this case, it appears that Japan had over estimated the benefit of EU and placed too much expectations and committed too much of its economic plans to having UK as part of EU, such as the free flow of goods from UK to EU. The threat may also be from EU to Japan more than Japan trying to tell UK what to do.

Japan warns UK PM rivals on no-deal Brexit

I had to laugh at that headline "Japan warns". UK's intetnal politics are no concern of Japans.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Certainly Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono has not made threats, warnings but not threats, the same however cannot be said Koji Tsuruoka Japanese ambassador to the United Kingdom though.

Simply deal with political and economic change. It is not necessarily something to be afraid of

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I think UK had begged Japan to invest in UK and had promised that UK would never leave EU.  Japan's ambassador deserves to make some warning or threatening if he did.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Yes, Margaret Thatcher, 1982 apparently shortly after this speech at the Japan Press Club.

Mrs Thatcher gave guarantees that Japan investment would find a welcome economic environment in the UK. The single market was in its infancy.

Well Koji Tsuruoka gave this interview to the Guardian I would not describe as threatening. However Koji Tsuruoka apparently was more candid when the subject was broached with Jeremy Hunt. Of course that is if one can take Jeremy Hunt word?

Every single Brexiteer, especially those asking for a no-deal should be forcefully removed from Japan and made to come and live in Britain.

Very macho of all of you all; advocating no-deal while "hiding" in Japan (and moaning at every opportunity).

Very macho of all of you all; advocating no-deal while "hiding" in Japan

Peeping Tom,

I don't know what you're talking about. Japan is very much in line with Brexiteers' aspirations. There's no "free movement" of people here, customs unions, backstops, etc., etc.. Indeed Japan has a strict, controlled immigration system that Brexiteers can only dream of, and independent sovereign customs operations.

And there will be a snowball in Hades when Japan integrates itself politically with its neighbors. LOL. Until the very recent TPP program, Japan has long led a "no deal" existence that served itself very well.

The true hypocrites are the Remainers who have chosen to live in the sovereign, politically economically independent island of Japan than back in integrated Britain. They should be kicked out.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

"I don't know what you're talking about. "

Oh, yes you do! I'm talking about those JT "experts", brave enough to call on "no deal" while remaining far away from the mess about to happen.

If you think no deal is a good thing, then leave Japan (where you are being totally unhappy with their backwardness anyway) and come to experiment the true joy of a no deal Brexit.

If not you personally, you know exactly whom I'm talking to.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Japan stop meddling in UK affairs. Perhaps, the UK should retaliate and demand Okinawa be let have it's independence from Japan, or demand Japan stop's it's Whaling activities, or even Japan to cease it's claim to certain islands which in itself is regionally destabilizing.

When it comes to Business, Japan got fed backhanders by various UK Governments to bring their manufacturing to the UK. It was almost akin to State Companies under the guise of being Private... Those UK Government's are to blame more than Japan here though...

"Brexit" is a good thing for the UK, the British people are Independent & Creative thinkers (unlike their Japanese counterparts), they're also distinctively separate, Culturally from others. (Boozing and bad behavior overseas excluded). The Europe of today, however is somewhat attempting to curtail all of those things.

So, Japan, please do, pull out of the UK, we don't need you.

Europe = Germany winning WWII

So Germany, you ain't having the UK.
