Kono, in a speech in Abu Dhabi last month, called that target "lamentable" since 24 percent is the global average now.

I rarely (close to never) agree with members of LDP, but I have to admit, this guy is right.

Japanese companies are planning to build more than 40 new coal plants.

Which is incomprehensible. Japan has been a leader in new technologies for decades, still is, but can't come with something better than coal ? At this point it's just a lack of willingness.

Good luck Mr. Kono. It’s gonna be tough to get the energy cartels to let go of the billions they have invested in nuclear power though. Japan has a chance to become world leader in renewables. They have the technology and the need.
