It's not a war that Toyota can win.

The contenders are not other than Tesla

Globally, Toyota outsells Tesla 20:1. This comparison is not even worth making, even taking in the medium-term future into account (15 - 20 years). Not only that, Tesla is a prestige car company, they will never be cheap, and will only compete with the likes of Mercedes Benz or Audi in terms of unit sales.

Toyota on the other hand is the world's largest car maker, has actual resources that dwarf the resources that Tesla's "smoke-and-mirrors" market value can provide, and has lead the car industry to hybridisation, which Tesla should be thanking them for. Without that, electric vehicles still wouldn't make sense to the average person on the street in terms of usable range (not advertised claims) and charging times vs gasoline powered vehciles.

I’ll be looking at VW and the new model Teslas coming out as options...

Wonderful.

God, but they’re ugly-looking cars. Whatever happened to Pininfarina, Zagato et al?

-Wireless software update.

Will that be as reliable as Windows 10's updates?

Probably best to carry a jemmy to get yourself out of the car and to open the boot where your emergency folding bike is stored.

Europe had the Chernobyl melt down followed by some fugly looking German cars, especially the mid to late 2000s BMWs with the Dame Edna face on the 5 series and a 7 series that looked like Camry that had been rear ended. Now it's Japan's turn with the Fukushima melt down followed by bizarre looking Toyota's, Lexus's (Lexi ?) and really horrible looking Hondas.

Toyota is the world's LARGEST car manufacturer.

You've learned something today.

Hopefully!
