Why does Trump, a convicted felon and racist, keep making the Black Power salute? And tariffs? One trick Trump.

In American Sign Language, holding up the closed fist like that means "me".
So its a fitting gesture to be continually used by a narcissist.

There are no Japanese tariffs on American-imported left-driven cars.

Trump should consider the potential economic consequences if Japan and China, two of the largest foreign holders of U.S. Treasury bonds, were to sell off their holdings and reduce future purchases. Such actions could lead to rising interest rates, increased borrowing costs, a weakened U.S. dollar, market volatility, and shifts in global economic dynamics. For the average American, this could mean higher mortgage rates, more expensive loans, and increased costs for imported goods, potentially straining household budgets and slowing economic growth. Time for China and Japan and the rest of the world to find a better market where business is conducted as it should be and not like a school yard shake down.
Peter Neil
fine. Japan should stop exporting models to the u.s. and only sell those made in the u.s.
things will change next election, or earlier when consumers, carmakers and investors revolt.
it's going to hurt u.s. automakers more, who have the least u.s. domestic only parts.
tesla imports batteries for two models from japan.

The man is a Russian asset owned and controlled by Putin and Musk.
Japan would be wise to distance its ties to the US and anyone here thinking 'He & the US have nothing to do with Japan, it wont effect me/us'..... is a total buffoon.
Ah_so
I think he's doing this for a bet - to see if he can bring the US economy from boom and into recession I'm less than twelve months of taking office.
To-date he's running ahead of schedule.

This is ongoing, especially for China for obvious reasons.
"China, Japan and the UK are dumping billions of dollars in US Treasuries.
New numbers from the Treasury Department show the three nations collectively slashed their holdings by $81 billion in December.
China unloaded $9.6 billion in Treasuries, reaching its lowest holdings since 2009 at $759 billion."

More cars will need to be built in USA- which is already starting to happen.
around 4 trillion dollars in tariff related investments in USA already.
Wasabi
It will end badly for the US economy, the rest of the free world will make deal without them.
HopeSpringsEternal
Everyone knew this was coming, only ONE major market besides the US imported more than 10% of their cars, Mexico at 16% while the US was at 53%. EU typically very low single digits, China and India even lower.

Auto companies like Nissan are 'relieved' as they can expand their existing US production capacity far easier than most. Companies can scale up existing US facilities quickly, so the market will be fine, minimal disruption.
Not surprisingly, many car companies like Hyundai, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Tesla, etc. and parts makers have announced new investments in US Auto production, creating jobs, wealth and taxes in the US = MAGA
DJT - says what he means and means what he says
tora
No need to bother. Less than a handful sold here per year. Can guarantee would be protectionist measures introduced if American made vehicles became a significant portion of the market.
I'veSeenFootage
That Americans will be paying, "lol".
kohakuebisu
There's not much point in having a big US salary if you just have to spend it on an expensive car and have a big payment to make every month. Tariffs make those expensive cars more expensive.
My income won't impress anyone when expressed in USD, but my very nice car (its a V6) cost me peanuts and was bought with cash. Every month I have no car payment. This increases my disposable income
https://www.lendingtree.com/auto/debt-statistics/
GuruMick
Blacklabel....how long will it take for US car makers to fill the void left by imports now too expensive for consumers.
Not like a pop up restaurant .... starting a new car manufacturing plant, or even ramping up existing ones.
And maybe the price of imported cars is not the only reason US consumers buy imports.
Took the US decades to leave monster sized cars behind.....and then the Hummer ....the horror.
Trump is not capable of complex thinking where a number of things need to be factored into decisions.
He is one dimensional .
Anyway, in the short term at least, US consumers will be worse off.
Harry_Gatto
How would he know that?

President Trump made a clear pledge to dismantle the globalist, the supply chain mentality.
OK, the speed, ruthless brute force could have been racketed, as opposed to a need to accomplish the task with a blanket "scorched earth" policy.
2nd April, a global across-the-board reciprocal tariff policy could be fully implemented sector by sector, product by product.
The political diplomatic implications will reset US trade partnerships.
European economies will feel the harsh change.
wallace
Japan produces more cars in America and employs more American workers than any other foreign company. It directly employs over 109,000 U.S. workers and supports millions more through its supply chain and related industries.
There are no American car firms in Japan. Ford pulled out years ago.
HopeSpringsEternal
Japanese auto companies will soon employ MANY more Americans, as will the entire industry, why Hyundia Group just announced a $22Billion investment yesterday to expand steel, parts and auto production in the US.
DJT Policy best of all is not spending any Govt. $, that's the beauty of it, why Americans far more optimistic now.
DJT like all great leaders remains flexible and can easily pivot but committed to his vision of re-industrializing the US. No longer will jobs and wealth be sent foolishly overseas, while improving US National Security.
patkim
So either the price of cars for the consumer will go up, or retailers will end up having a smaller profit margin. And Trump will be able to pocket that money for tariffs for himself and the richest 1%. I see.

around 4 trillion dollars in tariff related investments in USA already.
and almost 6 trillion wiped from the markets in 2 months. Reagan was a tariff man, he also had 2 recessions under his administration.
Trumps 1st trade war with China resulted in a record number of US farmers going bankrupt, about 93% of all the tariffs raised in Trumps 1st term went to subsidies for those same US farmers hurt by his tariffs. LOL
Trumps a moron, he thinks the EU Canada Mexico wont retaliae with there own tariffs. 1.5trillion in US exports goes to these countries every year, how many US jobs are on the line. yes 100s thousands

Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent know tariffs revenues will gradually drop as companies decide to re-shore to the US to avoid paying or their countries decide to lower their tariffs to avoid reciprocity
Auto is a sector specific, so reciprocity not in play, part of Trump's US Re-industrialization National Security Plan to include steel, aluminum, chips, ships, pharma etc.
US tariffs will help US Govt. improve its fiscal situation, DJT refers to it as the Dept. of External Revenue Service
Peter Neil
you can look at the steel industry and those tariffs to see the future of auto tariffs. with the new steel tariffs, domestic (domestic), as in domestic steel prices have gone up 30% in the last month.
as I have said, domestic producers raise prices to match the import tariffed price.
inflation, reduced investment, reduced growth, reduced production, more unemployment.

Dream on, historical industrial investments announced just since Nov 5th, about same $amount as Japanese economy. Such investments happening for many reasons, including tax, energy, regulatory but also tariffs.

DJT simply copying current global standard requiring auto production to take place within domestic market.
Only ONE major country besides the US imports more than 10% of Autos, Mexico at 16% vs. 53% for US
Most countries import as a % of their market far less than 5% or +10x less than the US currently, India, China both less than 1%, Germany about 2.5% etc.
Clear based on $many Auto, Steel, Aluminum and Parts Maker announcements that production reshoring to US happening at scale due to DJT Policies around tariffs, taxes, regulations and energy.
DJT = More Jobs, Wealth, Taxes & US National Security!
Hiro
There's a reason that no advanced economy has done something this stupid with tariffs since the 1930s. US manufacturing output has basically been flat for the last 25 years. Significantly boosting domestic production will require real wages closer to its competitors and lower living standards.

Most of the Toyotas sold new in the US are made in America.
In fact, Toyota North America is the most “American” car you can buy in the US, being 70%+ manufactured and assembled in the US.
Ford and Chevy, on the other hand are between 30~40% made in America.

The most embarrassing thing nowadays is to be an United States American.
How fast can a narcissistic fellow change the image of the "greatest nation in the world" :))))

Exactly, so this is a big nothing burger but people are going to whine, cry and doom no matter what Trump does.

Not really, short-term, yes, long-term, No. Libs are shocked because they either didn't pay attention to him or were not used to someone keeping their word or both, but either way, Trump said that if he is elected, he will do this, so I think this is a great thing in my opinion.
MilesTeg
Even without tariffs, Europeans won't buy US cars. Most are built for the US domestic market with no consideration for driving, parking, and gas in other countries and only about 30% of US car exports have right hand steering. But the US is being unfairly victimized. LOL! Financial Times article sums it up well.

HopeSpringsEternal
The "louder" the illogical screams from abroad, the happier US auto workers and citizens regarding DJT auto and tariff policy, and that's the stone-cold truth.
MilesTeg
Stone cold truth is that foreign countries will buy even fewer US cars and US automakers will only be able to rely on domestic sales which won't be enough to sustain the industry.
chatanista
Even without tariffs, Europeans won't buy US cars. Most are built for the US domestic market with no consideration for driving, parking, and gas in other countries and only about 30% of US car exports have right hand steering.
Absolutely right. As a side note it has always been puzzling that Japan allows these huge gas guzzlers on the roads here with steering wheels on the wrong side.

Trump doing what we elected him to do, none of this is surprising- it’s what we want.
so let’s see the final result later and then pass judgement.

Time will tell, one thing's for sure, US should not import as % of sales +50X China or India, +20x Germany etc.
DJT just pursuing standard auto policy now in effect across world, requiring local content and production.

Trade agreements are negotiated by two countries not decided unilaterally. The US negotiated and agreed to auto trade agreements. They weren't forced to sign. If the US wants to go back to the negotiating table, most countries would without hesitation. But the world is out to get the US. This victimization attitude is typical.
Yet through all this nobody talks the number of foreign cars assembled in the US by US autoworkers. In some cases, it's as high as 60% - 70% for some models.
eric_japan
When the U.S, joined the WTO in 2001 the amount manufacturing losses dropped dramatically. Not only in America but all countries dropped dramatically and China ate everyone’s lunch. Trump is trying to right the ship of fairness. If Trump turned the US into the most successful it’s ever been in decades after his term, leftists would still be complaining, calling him names ( like you do on this site) and admins would ignore ( which they often do) on this site. He’s doing what most Americans wanted and voted for. In comparison to the last four years where so many people were saying. “Make it make sense” and many of those decided to vote red because blue was overboard with ridiculousness.

Japan's average tariff rate on U.S. imports is 3.2%.
Why American cars are not sold in Japan?
According to The Atlantic, most American automakers have been reluctant to invest the admittedly high amounts of capital required to develop and maintain the kind of dealer networks that Japanese consumers expect.
Blacklabel
oh I see. The only “massive inflation” you are actually claiming is a higher price if some decides to buy a new car not made in USA.
so if I don’t buy that?
all other what people call actual “inflation” is waaaaay down.
Blacklabel
US made also will have all interest on car loans as tax deductible.
So….anyone who chooses to buy a new car with a 25% tariff on it instead of US made can obviously afford it.

Japan should put a 100% tariff on Muskrat's cars.
