So, if I remember correctly, 24 slots would be split between Japanese and U.S. airlines. Which means if they are split evenly, U.S. carriers would get 12 slots.

The requests from the 3 carriers is for 15 slots, so not enough slots based on that math. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Flying on U.S. carriers has been horrible since the 80s. I avoid them when possible.

Flying on U.S. carriers has been horrible since the 80s.

Last year, I took Delta to Singapore, which was great, and later to Seattle-Portland which was fine, no different from Jal. Most of the cabin attendants were young Asian women.

Can only assume you mean domestically, which is by and large a freakshow unless you're willing to pay more. Internationally, I almost always fly United or ANA and the service, seating and overall experience are almost entirely the same.

There are already a ton of flights to NRT/HND. There needs to be more direct flights to KIX/ITM. There is only ONE from the Bay Area.

They aren't even close. United is just horrible. Cramped seats. Inferior food. And, surly flight attendants. Plus, until recently, they haven't even had a Premium Economy class. I'm not sure how many United JPN flights even have their new Premium Economy, as of now.

@garypen: if the demand was there at KIX there would be more flights. Its been tried over the years and consistently failed. No need to fly to KIX if they secure more HND slots and can funnel passengers off with regularity to anywhere in Japan. Same cannot be said for KIX where passengers wouldl have to transfer to ITM to have even close to the amount of destinations that HND has.

Really hated traveling internationally on U.S. carriers as service sucked, can't compare to Asian legacy carriers (LCCs are another story) because of their bad service and attitude toward customers, especially in economy class. However, there seems to be a transformation happening with Delta. Went to Portland in November and December from Narita Airport. The service in economy class was excellent, attitudes of in-flight staff were warm and friendly. First time, I thought it was a fluke, but on the second trip, it was wonderful so there is hope for U.S. carriers. Delta is definitely back on my list of carriers now.

Don't often fly US carriers, but my last couple of experiences were mediocre at best.  Still a way to go to match Singapore or Emirates or Qatar.  Even JAL pretty ordinary.  ANA is a little better.

I like flying American. Always great cabin crew, great service.

I fly to the US 4 times a year for the last 20 yrs.

Airlines are all same.

ANA has slightly better food and not important.

All of the airlines fly the 787 nightmare liner and the service is about the same. Whatever you do, never take a "window" seat in economy! I got a chance to fly the 380 and like it! Instead of more landing slots the airlines should be forced to fly larger aircraft.

The Airbus A380 is dying.....they will no longer build it. Larger isn't better in this case.

John, the airlines are just greedy putting more and more people in smaller and smaller planes. There will be a time when no more takeoff and Landing spots can be accommodated. ANA has just started flying the Airbus 380. I really hate flying in the 787 nightmare! The 777 is just as bad as airlines start putting 11 across in economy.

Delta all day, everyday. I’m from the ATL and although DL295/6 nonstop is nice, going all the way to and from NRT to take it is not. Having a nonstop out of HND to get me home will be nice

Most of inbound visitors to Japan originate from Korea and China.

Inbound visitors from the US is less than from Thailand.

I am amazed how Japan is willing to give half the slots to US carriers.

The vast majority of people I meet on transpacific US carriers aren't staying in Japan. They're headed to or leaving from Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, etc., and transferring in Japan, due to the fuel distance limits of airliners.

Not sure the last time you've flown United but they've had a "premium economy" class for years now. I've been flying economy plus on United to Japan since 2012, never had any issues and they partner with ANA who is my preferred JP carrier.
