I am looking forward to travel in Japan. I am in Canada and not allowed to travel because of vaccination mandatory rule.

Being in Canada for the past few months, and speaking to the people here, those rules have been very popular, it kept Canada's covid deaths very low. I feel comfortable out and about as a result. Good for Canada for taking care of their people and not giving into Freedumb.

Apartment/villa lets are seen as inherently Covid-safer than hotels, as you have less interaction with others (staff/guests), which will boost AirBnb. Tax changes will simply increase the cost of your AirBnB stay but won't make much difference. Most of the planet has now moved past Covid. Japan is remaining in it for political reasons, keeping out the tourists being one of the main ones. Don't assume that will change. Governments are happy to torpedo their own economies, Brexit-style now. Incidentally, the Japanese govt. block on tourism, as it doesn't have a medical rationale, is probably a breach of the law on interfering with trade. But I rather doubt anyone is going to take the government to court.

Planning to finally visit Japan again this summer. So if I walk around without a mask I will not get arrested but might get a few annoyed stares and do the image of gaijin in Japan a great disservice? Thanks all for letting me know.

I'm hoping to get back in the autumn, and if I need to wear a mask to get out and about (providing we're allowed back in) then I will.

Air BNB in Japan has some great deals and places to stay in major cities and tourist destinations. However buyer beware as some listings are actually hotels or hostels that can be booked directly or from hotel booking sites for less. Also the reporting some ‘hosts’ require is abit over the top - copies of passports, daily logs of all visitors with copies of their IDs and so on. And before you can say you can ignore this, remember many places have security cameras recording at their entrances and so on.

But not in Japan.
