...And then fire them in January

Normally you are right, of course, and many companies would do that, but in this specific case the dimension would be too big and the social distortions unforeseen. Additionally it would be also very costly to do that, for example dismantling globally all those huge storages or finding someone else for the tenant area etc. So they keep it instead even if operating sometimes or always in red numbers, which then is side-financed internally by the big data business. In addition, I’ve read elsewhere, that they of course would like to withdraw, but on the other hand also want to keep their feet in the door too. If they would cancel that part of business completely the existing and new potential rivals would take it all over and of course pushing them out of that whole branch, something they don’t want either, maybe for historical or emotional reasons, whatever, because they grew big with it and such.

Read and learn. Amazon's other lines of business are not possible without retail.

If that was indeed true then their management would have sold off those money losing assets. No corporation hangs on to unprofitable divisions, especially if as you posit they "don't need" them.

Yes, it’s very generous, because that’s only his hobby bringing losses. Amazon has quite changed in recent years and lives from IT , AI and related data services. They don’t need the warehouse business delivering goods to you and employing masses of staff and drivers, that’s all only an obstacle, and in that sense , that they continue it for a while and bringing jobs before and during the holiday season, could be seen indeed as quite generous.

How very generous of you Mr Bezos (NOT), inflation at 9% because of some stupid war, but your workers get 5% wage rise. Always moving backwards getting poorer as they toil for your insane wealth.

Amazon is making a loss. Look it up.

Nomadland highlighted this American lifestyle.
100 years and a Great Depression and Hoovervilles later, the US still has not progressed from precariat migrant communities as a result of neo-liberal trickle down economics.
