ANA warns of possible pilots' strike

7 Comments

ANA said Friday its pilot unions have threatened a 24-hour strike on Saturday. The airline said it is continuing urgent negotiations with the unions concerned to avert industrial action and the disruption to passenger services it will cause.

Should the strike go ahead, ANA said it will do everything possible to minimize the impact on passengers and services. No international flights are expected to be affected. However domestic flights could be subject to cancellation and/or delay.

Passengers intending to take ANA domestic flights on Saturday should check the status of their flights with the ANA Reservations Center (0570-029-222), on ANA Sky Web (ana.co.jp/eng) or by contacting their nearest ANA branch.

An ANA spokesman said, "We are very disappointed that our four pilots unions have threatened to take strike action. This action is unnecessary and will prove disruptive. We have put forward a fair set of proposals with the pilots unions. ANA will continue urgent negotiations with the unions to avert a strike."

If the strike goes ahead it is expected that 25.7% of a total of 980 domestic flights (186 cancellations, 66 delays) would be affected.

Yeah, because airline pilots are really the group of people currently suffering the hardest in Japan, it makes perfect sense that they should strike. In fact I think it is the only responsible thing for them to to do.

Somehow JT cgi-scripts somehow managed to delete my /sarcasm tag on that post. But I guess it was obvious anyway

"ANA said Friday its pilot unions have threatened a 24-hour strike on Saturday."

The article says a one day strike is possible, which is perfectly legal. But SquidBert, why do make assumptions?

1) the article doesn't say the strike is about pay or is about suffering; 2) he article should present both sides if the story instead of just management's.

This is really poor reporting and antiunion propaganda, but unless you know something not reported here SquidBert, it is just you bashing workers who may have a very good reason for opposing their bosses. Let's get the facts and not assume before judgeing.

@Beangry,

You are probably right, I just thought the ANA pilots were busy taking snapshots of stewardesses in the pilot seat, stalking and stealing underwear on balconies, and turning airplanes upside down. Didn't think they had time to strike. ;^)

Jokes, aside. They of-course do have a right to strike, I assumed that it was about salary. But it could of course be about something safety related just as well.

go ahead...this disruption is much smaller than it happens due to bad weather conditions.
