I'll bring in maybe 2-3 kg each time, so in total up to around 20kg a year; brown rice for me and friends.

Where I live you can buy brown rice in the stores. You can buy brown rice from the local farmers in a 25kg brown paper bag. Many locals do that. If they want white there are kiosks available for the milling which you do yourself for a small charge.

Still, more varieties in the US. Brown rice in Japan is basically the same everywhere. In fact, if I do buy brown rice in Japan, I get it from Yonaguni.

California rice is grown from the Japanese variety.

Most is, others are from Thailand, Pakistan, India.

What about Japan's ability to Supply its own local Market ?

If there is a risk of external entities purchasing all of the Rice produced within Japan, then that, would be a Serious matter that the Government should deal with right now.

Japan has an aging population of farmers and this means that slowly but surely food security in Japan is being affected.

At the moment, Thailand has a glut of rice and I’ll be getting some Thai mai this month-very fragrant!

Countries that have very poor safety processing issues like with rodents and insects and especially mycotoxins bleach and irradiate the grain products.

Please stop. This is just not true. Many different varieties of rice are grown in California including Alborio rice, the Italian variety used to make Risotto. California rice is considered a premium rice everywhere in the world. For years Japan would arrest and deport the California rice delegation at US Commerce Department sponsored trade shows, claiming there is nothing the Californians could teach Japan about growing rice. Literally arrest and deport the Californians. Never mind that at least in the 1980s and 1990s when this conflict was ongoing Japanese rice cost about five times as much as California rice of equal quality. That has now changed and you find Calrose rice is a popular product in Japanese Costco stores. I believe only Australia grows rice in the same water thrifty way that California does. I have had rice all over Asia and none are clearly better than that from California and some like the rice my family in Shanghai buys is very much inferior.

A Mediterranean climate and relative scarcity of water drives a different form of rice agriculture in California.

The Salinas, San Joaquin and Sacramento Valleys have the most fertile and productive soil in the US. Most California rice is grown in the Sacramento Valley where the soil is soft dark loam. There are no antibiotics used on California rice. Any herbicides or pesticides are applied very early in the rice growth so there is no residue on the mature grains at harvest. Water depth is used to help control weeds. Shallow water no more than 5 inches (127 mm) allows the rice to out compete the weeds, minimizing the need for herbicides.
