To all those bemoaning the rise of "populism" - if the mainstream parties actually took determined and substantive action toward China and its lopsided trade arrangements with the West -- as Trump is now doing-- then populism wouldnt be as popular as it is now.

Too many free-marketer, pro-globalism leaders in power have created this situation today. China is destined to be No. 1. The west is in danger of becoming second-tier, if something isn't done now.

Well, if they're destined, then why bother?

Some worry that Europe could lose out if Washington and Beijing strike a deal to purchase billions of dollars more in products to try to shrink the U.S. goods trade deficit with China.

Given the deals Xi just made in Italy and France (the port thing and the Airbus thing), I guess members of the EU won't outwardly speak up with Trump anytime soon.

Yeah, let's just give up. Globalization is bigger than any of us, right?

@JeffLee

I think your perspective conveniently left out the big western multinational corporations, many of which has time and again demonstrated they are entirely uninterested in the well being of individual countries, the west, or anything else except their bottom line.

China is very good at leveraging the western corporate self interest, because Chinese corporate is also about self interest of individual CCP cronies.

Unchecked greed of the East & West working together. Not a good recipe IMHO.

Bingo, that's probably what Trump detractors are probably saying and accusing him of being a unilateral nationalist etc.

It actually is, yes.

I also can't help but notice the underlying hypocrisy in your argument. You only start complaining about globalization when the West is "in danger of becoming second-tier", but have no problem when it dominates the globe, as it historically has.
