Two of President Joe Biden 's top goals — fighting climate change and expanding the middle class by supporting unions — are colliding in the key battleground state of Michigan as the United Auto Workers go on strike against the country's biggest car companies.

It is going to be an uphill battle and going against decades of neo-liberal "reforms" that had as one of their main goals destroying unions and creating an Orwellian "right to work".

It began with Reagan and Thatcher but Clinton carried the torch; gutting welfare and social benefits, deregulating corporations and banks, slashing corporate taxes and shifting the tax burden onto a shrinking middle class.

Unions were the bulwark that created broad based prosperity up until about 30 years ago and when that broke...

In an interview with NBC's “Meet the Press,” Trump said that “electric cars are going to be made in China,” not the United States, and he said “the auto workers are being sold down the river by their leadership.”

Trump's nationalist rhetoric combined with corporate welfare socialism for the rich ending up in negative results for communities was tried once and didn't end up very well.

Only the Republicans are still peddling supply side trickle down economics as a solution to the economic landscape of 2023.

When the Energy Department announced a $9.2 billion loan for battery plants in Tennessee and Kentucky, part of a joint venture by Ford and a South Korean company, Fain said the federal government was "actively funding the race to the bottom with billions in public money.”

I am surprised at the silence of the usual MAGA supporters on this issue. They are usually foaming at the mouth at any article about Biden or any slight criticism of him.

I suppose the fact that that the GOP are consistently anti-union and anti-worker destroys the illusion that they are for the blue-collar working man and they prefer to sit this issue out and divert to talking about China like Trump.

No US president has ever come out to support striking workers before. This unprecedented shout out is the kind of action needed for the Dems to make a dent in America's MAGAmadness. Unfortunately, not putting old Joe out to pasture and fielding a young dynamic leader to challenge the GOP dinosaurs reveals all too clearly the risk aversion of frightened, scelerotic party machine.

LOL

Statement By The President Clinton On Most Favored Nation Status For China, 1993

I particularly want to recognize Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell of Maine and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi of California. Their tireless dedication to the cause of freedom in China has given voice to our collective concerns. I intend to continue working closely with Congress as we pursue our China policy.

I wonder how many union jobs were destroyed by this?

President Clinton linked MFN to progress on human rights in China.

How's that workin out 20 years later?

Well I guess if you buy sweatshop items it's great.

I wonder how many union jobs were destroyed by this?

That was my whole point by mentioning Clinton taking up the mantle of the trickle down Republicans and starting a neo-liberal, rightward shift of the Democratic party that Biden is lately trying to correct.

In an interview with NBC's “Meet the Press,” Trump said that “electric cars are going to be made in China,” not the United States, and he said “the auto workers are being sold down the river by their leadership.”

Electric cars will be manufactured on every continent except Antarctica by companies headquartered in every continent except Antarctica. Big established manufacturers like GM, Ford, Toyota, Honda, Mercedes Benz and Stellantis have the advantage in having deep pockets and established global manufacturing. If US auto workers demand too much US manufacturers already have big assembly lines in Mexico that can absorb production from US plants. That is what would happen. China has a labor shortage and nobody is investing there. It's a silly scare tactic by a well known bs thrower ( still waiting for his beautiful replacement for the Affordable Care Act .....)

BYD makes very affordable evs. These strikers are Luddites trying to hold back the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which China and Chinese companies like BYD are significantly ahead of the US. Trying to hold on to these jobs and not fully commit to the Fourth Industrial Revolution will not help America one bit.

Trump's nationalist rhetoric combined with corporate welfare socialism for the rich ending up in negative results for communities was tried once and didn't end up very well.

No, Trump has always been for the self-empowerment of small business growth and putting the wealth back into the hands of the individual

Only the Republicans are still peddling supply side trickle down economics as a solution to the economic landscape of 2023.

So far the redistribution of wealth as instituted by the left has left millions poorer than before in the most hardest financially strapped cities across the country, and what are they doing about it? Pushing for more wealth redistribution, robbing Paul to give to Peter and while that money is running out, the crime rate continues to rise as a result of a lack of employment opportunities, the left cannot create jobs in the private sector, so they want to bump up the salaries of government workers, that money will come to an end as well.

I am surprised at the silence of the usual MAGA supporters on this issue.

Some of us have to pay the bills

They are usually foaming at the mouth at any article about Biden or any slight criticism of him.

If it is warranted to comment then we will

I suppose the fact that that the GOP are consistently anti-union

Overwhelmingly, yes.

and anti-worker

Absolutely not!

destroys the illusion that they are for the blue-collar

They are and that is why the Republicans are the party of the working man nowadays.

You can walk and chew gum at the same time.

I hope you are better at working to pay the bills than citing sources to support your positions. Some people do actually read.

A press release put out by the Trump administration a few days before the 2020 election touting the Trump economic policies?

The results of the election showed not enough people fell for that. Just like no one falls for the Republicans are a friend of unions and the working man.

Trump's comments have not earned him any support from Shawn Fain, president of the UAW.

“That’s not someone that represents working-class people,” he told MSNBC earlier this month. “He’s part of the billionaire class. We need to not forget that. And that’s what our members need to think about when they go to vote.”

Exactly.

You mean when we got hit by COVID and Trump was forced to do the lockdowns which now we know were a complete devastation.

Reading…

According to a recent survey, confidence among America's small-business owners remains near an all-time high, perhaps reflecting the Trump administration's significant pro-growth economic reforms to date.

The results of the election showed not enough people fell for that.

More people did fall for it and more people by the day are regretting their votes believing that this administration would handle the virus better as a whole, that was not the case broadly.

Just like no one falls for the Republicans are a friend of unions and the working man.

The Republicans are absolutely friend of the workingman, that’s the reason why more people are voting for Republicans, and but less support for the unions.

Biden is only pro labor prior to elections,

People have already forgotten how Biden screwed the Railroad Workers Union.

Years ago, in an interview widely shared, Biden is seen telling a union worker " I don't work for you.."....... sometimes even Biden lets slip a bit of truth.
