Azabudai Hills complex opens in Tokyo

Azabudai Hills, a multi-use complex and new world-class neighborhood, opened in central Tokyo on Friday.

Embracing the concept of "Modern Urban Village," Azabudai Hills is a nature-rich landmark with a world-class business center, attractive retail and residential facilities and a huge open space filled with lush greenery that brings people together, developer Mori Building Co said.

Spanning a vast area of approximately 8.1 hectares, Azabudai Hills boasts an impressive 24,000 square meters of lush greenery, providing a total floor area of approximately 861,700 square meters that accommodates diverse urban functions, including offices, residences, retail facilities, cultural facilities, educational institutions, and medical facilities.

The complex has the Keio University Center for Preventive Medicine; The British School in Tokyo, Janu Tokyo, the world's first sister-brand hotel of Aman; the Tokyo Venture Capital Hub, which brings together around 70 Japanese venture capitals; approximately 150 retail stores including luxury brands and Azabudai Hills Market; and the Mori Building Digital Art Museum: EPSON teamLab Borderless, previously located in Odaiba. All these exceptional establishments are set to open in Azabudai Hills. Some facilities in Azabudai Hills will open gradually after December.

At the heart is 330-meter-tall Azabudai Hills Mori JP Tower, Japan's tallest skyscraper. It beats the previous title holder Abeno Harukas in Osaka by 30 meters and is slightly shorter than Tokyo Tower, the capital's landmark tower standing at 333 meters.

The skyscraper contains a co-working space and a cafeteria specially designed for employees of tenant companies to socialize outside the bounds of their organizations.

About 20,000 people are expected to work in the complex, while 3,500 people are scheduled to live in about 1,400 apartments built on the premises.

@Chico3- Mori uses “Hills” (Roppongi, Omotesando, Toronomon, Azabudai Hills) while Mitsui corporation uses “Midtown” (Yaesu, Hibiya, Roppongi Midtown). Just branding for them

Kind of wonder that Tokyo has some areas with the word "Hills." Are they trying to promote these areas as posh areas. Makes you wonder.

I always wondered who rent the flats, offices of these luxury real estate complexes. The offer is increasing all the time. It is not like the economy was permanently booming.

What is sure is that all these complexes look the same turning what was a very interesting city in a much more boring one.

I was just there a few hours ago, just when the British school let out. Pretty chaotic. Half the kids (and their moms) appear to "commute" to and from school using taxi cabs. I can already see that the street in front of the Russian Embassy will be perpetually clogged with traffic from the shoppers and the residents.

High-rise complexes soaring over a sinking economy. The nickname "Tower of Bubble" is well deserved.

It seems as though the area has opened to lukewarm reception at best, and outright mockery at worst. Pretty unceremonious overall.

I don't think it is a terribly ugly building - definitely have seen worse. The smaller buildings surrounding the skyscraper as well as the "green space" are ridiculously goofy looking, though. I think if you want to have "green space" you should just open a park. The messaging is really weird overall.

I think the long term success of the project depends on if it can attract dynamic global firms as tenants. The whole ad campaign seems to be a giant sales pitch for that. If it winds up as another Sumitomo satellite, one must wonder if that purpose couldn't have been achieved efficiently and cheaper some other way.

They also need to bring in cool shops and restaurants, because for those that aren't going to work in that behemoth, they're going to need to give people a reason to actually go there. Can Azabudai provide space for things that aren't easily obtainable in other parts of the city? That matters.

These luxury real estate complexes are money laundering schemes for transnational capital.

They diatort the housing ,market, have mostly absentee landlords and used for capital holding so neighborhood small business dies, and are used by shady rentiers for money laundering.

That sums up about all of these developments.

Of course the LDP cronies are complicit.

Would have appreciated an address, nearest train stations. Hope there are also the needed trash bins throughout the complex.
