adding that the cuts of 17,000 positions globally "will include executives, managers and employees."

There are 346 people who lost their live in Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302. Now 17 thousands employee will lost heir livelihood.

Real investigation didn't occur during Lion Air Flight 610 that crashed on 29 October 2018.

Only after Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed on 10 March 2019, unfortunately for that company some of the victims are US Citizen. Public inquire only happen after family of those victims really pressure congress and FAA.

And the counterpoint to sakurasuki's argument is that Indonesian airlines in general and Air Lion in particular had historically atrocious safety records. Both the EU and the US blacklisted all Indonesian airlines, banning them from operating in their countries. The US lifted their ban in 2016 and the EU the following year. The first 737 Max mishap was so strange and occurred with an airline only recently unbanned from the EU that it was reasonable to suspect the quality of the airline rather than something inherent in the 73 Max, though evidence was leading investigators in that direction.

The second crash however was so much like the first that investigators then knew they had a major problem. I don't think the motivations were as sinister as sakurasuki implies.

So, Boeing is laying off 17,000 employees in the aftermath of a series of diversity-inspired disasters, is it.

It’s not going to make any difference whatsoever if they don’t a) abandon their commitment to diversity and b) get rid of all the employees who were hired for their diversity instead of their excellence. Any company that has a commitment to diversity necessarily lacks a commitment to excellence, or even basic competence, which will eventually have very negative consequences for its products and services.

So how are cutting corners on product quality to reduce expenses have anything at all to do with diversity? Looks to me like good old fashioned wealthy white guy greed and bad judgement.

The problem isn't the workers. It's the top management. The Boeing employees who signed off on the 737 Max were all wealthy white males.

As usual, when it comes to aviation related matters @Desert Tortoise nails it. And predictably @Ego...("I am a stain on the ...") veers off into fantasy land.

@gokai: We all make our own choices, but I can tell you that I always check kayak.com when considering flights because they show what kind of aircraft is scheduled to fly each trip. If I see that it's a 737 Max, I rule out that flight. Whenever possible, I'll go with an Airbus.

Horrible decisions at the top results with hundreds at the bottom to suffer and feel the pain.

How about cutting 10% of the top executives including the CEO and or president? Blaming everything on the strike, which the workers should have gotten paid more anyway, isn't the real reason.

The hiding of the 737 Max design problems, non-training of the pilots for it, crashes and the following continued coverups and other poor decisions are.

So you are saying a black woman cannot do the same work that a white male can? Really? I have enough hands on leadership of people from all backgrounds as a Naval Officer to know that is not true. I can take anyone from any background and make them part of a team. Everyone has a strength. A good leader finds those strengths and puts them where they do the team the most good. Maybe I was the luckiest Naval Officer to ever walk a squadron hanger but I always managed to have good people working for me and we got things done. I am not sure that was all luck. I made a point of knowing my people. A lesson I learned early is that if you make your subordinates successful, you will be successful to. Train your people and let them make decisions. Let them make some mistakes too but give them the ability to succeed and nine times out of ten they will. That is how I led people. Seemed to work.

A couple of other points. Lead by example. That means being honest and demanding honesty from your people. Admit your mistakes, never be afraid to apologize when you make one. Listen to what your team is telling you. Trust them and they will trust you.

Recently, on one hand they just reported or published a rosy number of Jobs created. While telling us the unemployment is going down. Yet, on the other hand just in the year 2024, downsizing is in full swing. Amazon, Alphabet, BlackRock, Citigroup, Microsoft, Salesforce, Disney, Estee Lauder, IBM, Intel, Twitch, and now Boeing. Which begs the question is the economy getting better or worse?

See which percentage of the job cuts are in upper management, there is a huge different between a company actually having to downsize (which would mean cutting out these redundant management jobs) and a company just laying off part of their workforce to increase profit by decreasing the level of service it provides.
