Well fortune tellers surely can see the future so no problem there, business can use the date ie 2nd of December. Government departments might want to consider using a similar system and Calander printers if it's causing so much confusion. Confusion! If it's sooo difficult then make it easy. I suggest as used in other places using numbers 1,2,3,4 ect.

For purposes of brevity, instead of kanji some official forms have abbreviated the previous nengo using the Roman alphabet as M, T, S and H (for Meiji, Taisho, Showa and Heisei). It has been explained by some articles in the media that the new nengo will have to begin with a letter other than the four above. So a western influence can be said to be present, but very subtle.

Title is misleading.

Does anyone else see the irony of the new era being scheduled for starting on May 1st?

May Day being International Workers Day.

I’m confused as to why it takes so long to come up with the name. From what I understand, and maybe others can correct me on this, but when Hirohito died on Jan 7, 1989, they were able to announce the Heisei name the following day. I know it’s took them a while to come up with a title for Akihito as he’ll still be alive during the reign of the new emperor, but what would they do if he died today and Naruhito succeeded him the old-fashioned way. Would it still take until next year to name the new era?

Dear Chris, the point is to make it as complicated as possible that's the way things are done. The amount of meetings the total regection of what most people would call common sence are disregarded. I would suggest "got you" as the next period name antiquated system profligateled by old men who derive self worth by being near the "Royal Family".

I've heard the reason he has to wait until 2019 instead of being able to retire next year is that calendar makers and publishers expressed fury over the idea that their calendars might have to be corrected or reprinted (or that the decision was put off for too long and they went to print already).

The potential confusion over the naming of the next era sure does keep me up at night.

It really does not matter at all
