Never heard any good things from any Volkswagen owner... they always say how bad the quality is on these cars even brand new.... i prefer Japanese.... then maybe a powerful American muscle car

I always thought Porsche was the driving force behind VW, not the other way around.

" then maybe a powerful American muscle car"

Buy a 911, it will be faster and more reliable. And actually have brakes.

@madverts buy a Nissan GTR just as fast as a 911 (faster around the Nurburgring) and half the price! LOL

Yeah, but it's a Nissan....

Go test drive a Range Rover, and then sit in a Land Cruiser.

You can't copy class, the Japanese have been trying and failing for years.

Land Cruiser is made by Toyota. Anyway, many people consider getting in a car and having it run for them trouble free to be one of the classiest things around. The Land Cruiser beats the Range Rover hands down on that one.

"The Land Cruiser beats the Range Rover hands down on that one."

It does. I've owned several believe it or not, the HDJ80 being the cheapest to run and most reliable truck I ever owned.

But I can tell you have never owned or even driven a Range Rover. Or a 911. Class is something the Japanese fail to emulate, I don't care how well Nissan make the GT-R....

...the 911 is a mythical if not temperamental beast (I'm talking handling not reliability). Having just sold a GT2, and having spent all my adult life in the motor trade, you can trust me on this one Ben :)

But I can tell you have never owned or even driven a Range Rover. Or a 911.

Correct on the first. Incorrect on the second. As I said, just because you can afford to own something that you have to keep returning to the dealer to have them fix, does not mean you want to keep doing it.

I know you are in the motor trade. However, we will have to agree to disagree here. There is a point when you want something that does not add stress to your life. Japanese cars perform extremely well and they also start when you turn the key, pretty much without fail. Pieces don't come off the interior (Range Rover) and the repairs do not take forever (911). Heck, with the 911, I might as well have bought something else for all the times I spent driving a loaner that was something else.

I was being tongue in cheek about Land Rover being a Toyota product, I assume you knew I was being sarcastic. I know you know your cars.

Oh, I'm not arguing about the reliability of a Range Rover, especially the P38 - you can hear the money dropping out beneath a new one.

I'm surprised you had a problems with a 911 they're generally pretty bullet-proof if they're looked after. Was it an early 996?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Japanese cars are boring, but reliable.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Like anything. There is a bit of a luck of the draw.

Japanese cars are boring, but reliable.

Lots of people I know say that. I am always picking them up to give them a ride. ; )

Don't get me wrong, the Porsche was a thrill to drive when it was running and everything was working correctly.

I actually like the VW 2.0T engine. This is the same motor that they put into Audi A4 2.0T. Good power and flexabilty, and if you stay in top of the maintainance, you can have alot of fun with it. If you like Porsche, I would recommend the standard Boxer with 2.7 engine. Excellent handling and performce. It's a great car for affordable price.

That's weird. I typed '930. Like anything. There is a bit of a luck of the draw. '

Where the heck did the '1.' come from? Anyway, ETA.

A 930 eh? Nice, a real man's car, it's nice to meet someone who survived ownership of a widow-maker.

"If you like Porsche, I would recommend the standard Boxer with 2.7 engine"

IMO the Boxster is for hair-dressers like the Cayman, I've had an S in stock, which is the 3.0, and is the only one to have.

Audi make a nice car from the 3.0 litre engine and up, even the diesel's are sexy - I'm driving a chipped A5 TDi at the minute. 300bhp with excellent fuel economy, kinda makes me wonder if I'll go back to petrol engines for anything other than racing.....

The Audi 3.0 is a ok engine up to 100K, and problems develops after that. If you have turbo, some of them will develop a turbo seal leak, which is expensive to repair. I would skip Audi V6. The better choice would be 3.0 BMW inline 6 or Toyota/Lexus 3.5 V6 (which the same motor is used in Lotus). The BMW and Toyota 6 cylinders are very dependable and a good performer.

However, I hear they are boring ; )

I don't rate BMW or Mercedes on the German front simply because the chassis's are wooden and unrewarding. All these marques now have problems, it's even creeping into Toyota's diesel engines simply because they are becoming so highly complex, unlike back in the day.

Even Porsche apparently are talking of a diesel model, but I just think that is heresy.

Oh, and the Toyota engines and gearbox's in the Elise 111R blow up frequently on track use, yet their Rover engined counterparts do not. I could never figure that one out.

Ben Jack Jul. 11, 2012 - 06:51AM JST However, I hear they are boring ; )

Yes very boring, 2012 Lotus Evoria with 3.5 litre with pretty much stock "boring" Toyota engine except the exhaust modification accelerates 0-60 mph in less than 5 seconds, and top speed at over 160mph (261 km/h) which is about same performance spec as 2011 Porsche 911 Targa 4 with 3.6 litre 345hp motor.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

A Toyota isn't a Lotus. It's like calling this baby a "Lotus" because it was once;

http://www.hennesseyperformance.com/venomgt.html

Yes Toyota's a grey and boooooooooring. In fact, the Avora has all but scuttled Lotus Soportscars, like every time in the past when they stop doing what they do best which is building extremely light race cars and attempt to move upmarket. They're churning out the legendary Elise (I've owned seven) now with a pathetic 1.6 litre Toyota lump which has ruined sales.

But we're beck to my original point. Who's going to buy a Lotus that cost's as much as a 911?

We're bacjk to my original point.

Whoops a bit of an edit failure there

So you think that Rover engine that was developed by GM, Buick engine in the 60's is better? A 2 valve per cylinder also was used in TR8, and what happened. They are a crap motor.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Maderts: yet their Rover engined counterparts do not.

In 2003, the Range Rover started using BMW 4.4 engine, so Range Rover cannot come up with their own technolgy to develop their own engine. You be better off buying BMW X5 than a crappy Range Rover with no resale value. Nobody wants Range Rover. Only the illerates.

Madverts Jul. 11, 2012 - 03:38PM JST. Oh, and the Toyota engines and gearbox's in the Elise 111R blow up frequently on track use,

Where is the Toyota engine blowing up? I know Toyota is winning alot in the racing track. The 2011 season marked the Toyota Camry’s fifth year competing in the U.S. NSCS and NNS. In five years in the NSCS, Camry drivers have competed in 179 races and captured 39 wins and 31 pole positions, recorded 167 top-five finishes and 314 top-10s. In five NNS seasons, Camry drivers have participated in 174 events where they’ve claimed 64 wins, 54 pole positions, 251 top-10 finishes and 497 top-10s. Top driver like Busch won the 2009 NNS driver’s championship -- the Camry’s first driver’s championship in NASCAR -- and Toyota won three NNS manufacturer’s championship (2008-10). So where is the Toyota engine blowing up?

sfjp,

I'm talking about the Rover engined Elise which is a 4 cylinder twin cam from the nineties not the old SD1 lump why did you bring that up?

And yes, they don't blow up so much in track us, but the Toyota 2ZZ-GE ones do. That was always a paradox to me though they are fine for fast road use.....

Sure, the crazy racer guys with 2zz powered Elises pushing 250-300+ whp and beyond have broken many C60's. If you have any common sense, the C60 transmission is out of stock Toyota GTS and they are not made to handle heavy load for racing. In comparison to C60, the only difference in C64 is the gear ratio and 6th gear, but they both are lightweight passenger transmission that are not made for racing, but dumb Lotus want to save money and they used this for a shortcut. Toyota twin 1.8 engine is a good engine for normal driving but not for racing.
