When you systemically steal the intellectual property of your trading partners or strongarm them for it for many years -- while also forging ahead with a "Made in China" grand strategy of global economic dominance -- then you are basically asking for a trade war.

Tariff wars, trade wars, and technology wars go against historical trends and economic rules, and there will be no winners

That couldn't be farther from the truth. None of today's major economic powers got where they were through "free trade." They got there through protectionism.

Reciprocity is the way to go, fair is fair, equal access, level playing field etc. Then there's this matter of state subsidies, that's another sticking point. Finally, IP.

Given pandemic and risk in general, countries cannot over-rely on supply chains. Above some of the reasons countries are pulling out of China and putting up trade barriers. Underway for about 6 years now, picking up steam.

Well said.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

But either way, China won't lose.

-5 ( +4 / -9 )

Of course there's no economic winner, but that's not the point here. The West, for whatever reason, be it a green agenda, hating economy or capitalism in general, whatever else, follows an agenda of deindustrialization, less education, less innovation, less children, less consumption, let's say less of everything. Maybe the bigger paper theory behind all that is saving nature and resources or a general switching off and capitalist system reset, but this time without a great devastating world war as known from history, something like that. Even Trump follows it with those tariff tricks, which also strangle international trade as well as internal consumption, but obviously, Xi just hasn't fully understood that yet, which hidden clockwork ticks in the very background. He maybe still thinks, we want to make money, the West wants to make money, so how can they ever come up with those tariff threats?

"China is willing to maintain dialogue with the U.S. government, expand cooperation, manage differences and promote the development of China-U.S. relations in a stable, healthy and sustainable direction," said Xi.

Absolute codswallop.

No winners but China has a lot, lot more to lose as I'm sure Trump is well aware of. I expect China will complain a lot and then try to negotiate something knowing they will get a better deal.

So it’s exports that are supporting growth. Sounds like Japan

Slap a tariff on country A and B. These tactics are so primitive like playing the King's gambit, Benko gambit, Latvian gambit and so on. The CPC is much more exciting in its warfare and strategy than the obsolete Trump.

China quietly issued US dollars Chinese sovereign bonds in Saudi Arabia, which were snapped up immediately by international buyers.

China is taking a large part of the USD that it raises to finance Global South Countries at the edge of USD loan defaults. It's incubating consumption markets to export its productivity.

These transactions speed up the velocity of USD in FX markets. The net effect is identical to printing USD and introducing it into the FX markets. The Chinese are basically printing dollars and buying up a ton of commodities. They can do that because they are the god of manufacturing.

Trump's tariffs are not going to bring manufacturing back to the U.S. The U.S does not have the economy of scale in production.

For those who struggle to stay on topic and point to the real estate market, Chinese Sellers, mainly speculators are selling those empty condos at a loss rather than hoping for a bailout. Mean and while your millennial people are struggling to buy homes and will rent the rest of their lives like serfs centuries ago.

My opinion is the exact opposite.

The CPC is a system and will outlast Trump's trade war and the next five administrations easily. Its battery life is much longer that those clamoring China collapses. The latest batteries give you roughly 7.25 kilometers for 1 Kwh. This means a 80 Kwh battery should give you around 575 Km in range.

In China - 120 KWH is the maximum battery and is found in Huawei AITO M5. That's a 1000 km range. 700-800 km range EV's are a dime a dozen. The US as a superpower just does not have the stamina or staying power.

China in a bad place with their property bubble bursting, population collapse and general global view their technology is not to be trusted/used for anything critical.

Western tech. companies not free to sell good stuff now. China virus changed everything, FDI dropping and most companies reducing their China supply chain risk.

Only positive for China, Elon Musk in 1600, who wants bi-lateral relations to improve but many hawks don't agree.

No winners but China has a lot, lot more to lose as I'm sure Trump is well aware of.

That's it in a nutshell.

He's not interested in a mutually beneficial relationship if the other party gets more out of it than he does. He'd rather both suffer.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Chicken. Of course there are winners. The USA, the West and anyone except his China. He is completely in a panic.

I hope Mr Trump follows up on imposing tariffs and duties and China will crumble.

China in a bad place with their property bubble bursting, population collapse and general global view their technology is not to be trusted/used for anything critical.

The Communist Party of China offers no bailouts for the real estate firms. Burst the bubble and let the prices fall so homes can be affordable.

For the people...is quite a difficult concept for Americans to understand I have found. For the industry or corporate world..they'll have no problems.

What your people try to do is to be CEO's with $20 million annual salaries while the rest live like serfs and peasants. China eliminates these oligarchical barnacles.

property bubble bursting

Your people seek to create a “rentership” society where people remain renters for life never knowing the pleasure of having to mow large lawns under the hot August sun or to take down Christmas lights in bleak January wind. Such a plan could assure a steady profit for the landlord class, but would destroy the dream of ownership for the average person.

population collapse

China's population is 1.4 billion people. Japan's population is 0.124 billion. Only your people's math would render concerns of a collapse.

technology is not to be trusted/used

If so, there is no need to stifle competition. Imports of automatic digital processing machines, computers and servers are the standard imports from China a quarter of a billion USD.

And replaces them with CCP barnacles.

They will get old before they get wealthy, though.

The green movement steers people toward a life in better harmony with nature. Environmentalism is the new religion of the urban atheists.

The impending doom caused by human activity is the sin for the Final Judgement. Are not you people just copying Catholicism?

These apocalyptic predictions, like those in the Middle Ages, could turn out to be exaggerated or just plain wrong. Some climate activists take dissenters to court to ban their ideas by legal means. Not only energy companies but think tanks and dissident scientists have been targeted for criminal prosecution.

All must have faith that is green. Are verdant heretics being persecuted?

Is this a free country?

Here we are again with the same usual suspects.

The US is trying to advance its "Indo-Pacific" strategy to contain China, fanning the flames in the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan Straits and South China Sea.

The anti-Beijing hysteria is clearly being led by the United States worried that its world hegemony is being challenged.

Asia welcomes China because China is part of Asia, that would be the starting point of any conversation.

Xi said like Simon said!!! Ask the Chinese people they will tell you different and that is the reason many are trying to leave the country because XI said!!!! Since when did China try to have a dialogue with any country they talk in circles very dillutional. LMFAO *Xi Said "China is willing to maintain dialogue with the U.S. government, expand cooperation, manage differences and promote the development of China-U.S. relations in a stable, healthy and sustainable direction," said Xi.* Is it because he knows he is losing the people want him out!!

Lots of Chinese and Chinese-Americans with professional skills (especially in academia) are leaving USA and going back to China. They don't feel safe in this Sinophobic atmosphere. And this will only provide more talent to China.

Rsearch in Ivy league schools depend on Chinese talent. And you'll see fewer of them in USA now. TiHeeHee

Lots of Chinese and Chinese-Americans with professional skills (especially in academia) are leaving USA and going back to China.

Probably because the surveillance of them in the US by China is too severe.

Here we are again with the same usual suspects.

And we can repeat it as many times as are needed.

The US is trying to advance its "Indo-Pacific" strategy to contain China, fanning the flames in the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan Straits and South China Sea.

Still China's aggression in the Taiwan Straits and SCS.

Asia welcomes China because China is part of Asia, that would be the starting point of any conversation.

The starting point of any conversation is that China is feared.

When you systemically steal the intellectual property of your trading partners or strongarm them for it for many years …

the u.s. has been doing the same thing for a generation, from bugging the hotel rooms of japanese car manufacturers to learn their negotiation strategy on meetings with unions, then passing it on to the unions, to outright theft of proprietary processes of european companies by intercepting emails and phone calls and passing that on to u.s. companies.

Forty years ago there was a rationale for helping China to become a world economic power....the belief was that China would become a free democracy. Instead of becoming someone who promotes freedom, China has become a country that bullies its neighbors, and blatantly engages in unfair trade practices.

While it is inevitable that China becomes a major player on the world stage, it is not inevitable that the rest of the world will submit to Chinese rule without opposition.

President Xi Jinping, the government of China cannot be trusted to abide by or follow any rules treaty based trading laws/rules.

Tariffs, quotas and embargoes, are to protect US domestic industries from the government of China predatory trade practices, blatant trademark/patent infringement, Intellectual property theft:.

Xi Jinping, the government of China simply cannot be trusted.

China's Xi warns 'no winners' in trade war with U.S.

This XI guy is delusional. The winner will be the USA, Americans are sick of China abusing the world for only Chinese gain. Left and right are in alignment with this.

Judging by the parade of European, Asian, African and Latin American leaders visiting Beijing in recent months China is going to do just fine with partners all around the world.

Judging by the parade of European, Asian, African and Latin American leaders visiting Beijing in recent months China is going to do just fine with partners all around the world.

And that can all change in a second if China does something stupid to Taiwan.
