China don't require downpayment and loan guarantee? Indonesia and China wins. Indonesia can default anytime, and China uses their highspeed railway as a PR.

Yes, it seems financing (and trust) is just as important as technology - maybe even more so.

Made In China - high speed train - I think I'll walk

This does not look to be a business deal.

My preemptive condolences to Indonesia. China may be good at many things but building high speed trains is not one of them.

Moon1 and kabukilover, where are your countries helping out with this project? Hating on China much? If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Sore losers always have butthurt comments to make.

From a business point of view this is a very strange deal. All China want is a firm foothold in Indonesia - and in many other countries for that matter.

All I can see are comments from people who sound bitter and jealous, a la Suga.

Money doesn't grow on trees and Indonesia is not flowing in the cash. I wonder how many of these people have actually riden on the high speed trains in China? Well I have and I found nothing wrong in terms of comfort and price - and I actually survived! Maybe not with shinkansen, but people have died in rail accidents in Japan. You'd think the faster the train goes, the more accidents there'd be. I can understand why Americans and Japanese would feel bitter and petty minded - the former don't have much of a high-speed rail network, while the latter has been overleapt by China and has seen other countries enjoy more affordable and yet just as fast service.

Kabukilover:

China may be good at many things but building high speed trains is not one of them.

That explains why, within a decade or so, they've become THE country with the most extensive high-speed rail network in the world. And the country managed to build the railway to Lhasa. People die in plane accidents too, but I don't see anyone here bad-mouthing the airline industry.

Japan railways was asked to build the Shinkansen in Indonesia and Japan Inc conducted a 3 year field survey where to build the shinkansen, ground conditions, reinforcements, among other things. Then suddenly Indonesia announced that it is opening the bid to China as well 3 months ago. China submitted its bid using the same data compiled by Japan and Indonesia did not even blink. Somebody made serious cash.

The most interesting "What if" situation is who takes responsibility if when there is a fatal incident after it had been inaugurated?

Japan? PRC? or Indoensian SOEs?

Don't bring it to Japan.
