Beijing will expand the quota of value-added tax refunds by 140 billion yuan ($21 billion), the agency said.

How can the CCP give its citizens VAT rebates to help cope with inflationary pressure but this is beyond the ability of the LDP?

China is the last major economy bolted to a zero-COVID strategy of mass testing and tough lockdowns to stamp out infections.

Credit to China for putting the health of their citizens before their economy.

The US, which did not employ the zero covid policy, is suffering from inflation, and is likely headed to a recession in 2023; New Zealand, even though it is a much more homogenous country regarding socioeconomic factors compared to the US, went into a recession at the start of the Covid crisis.

China, which consistently used the zero covid policy, saw its GDP rise the first quarter of 2022; incredible performance.

Seems like being number one in the world with the lowest rate of covid infections as a result of its zero covid policy is something other countries could strive for; if they want to protect the health of their citizens and of their economies.

Other countries have reduced the burden from covid even more than China without having to trample on human rights, disrupt the access to health services (producing deaths) and obliterating the local economy in the zones of outbreaks.

This means that if China actually had the health and lives of their citizens as a priority it would have followed those examples. Instead it get worse results with huge unnecessary waste of lives and resources. This would indicate the real priority is to appear as successful, even if the cost is much higher.

Other countries have lower rates of infection compared with China, so it is not the number one. The same applies with death rates even without adapting the reported numbers to the way China does to hide the actual rates.

Any statistical data or sources for this opinion, even though it is off-topic?

Let's see statistical data; otherwise this is mere trolling.

If this reply to your comment is off topic so would be the original comment.

https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus

In cases per million China (at 821.5) is behind Micronesia Macao Marshall Islands Niger Chad Tanzania and Saint Helena.

In deahts per million China has 3.62, but it hides the actual number by reporting only deaths that do not have any other condition, which depending on the country only amout to 6-8% of the total. If the rest of the countries did the same then Burundi Chad South Sudan Niger Tajikistan Benin Tanzania Congo Nigeria Sierra Leone Burkina Faso Central African Republic, Buthan Eritrea Cote d'Ivoire would have lower death rates than China because they all report a total of less than 30 per million so even if as much as 10% of those deaths were completely free from any other disease (giving a wide margin) they would report less than 3 (and thus lower than China)

What about food to the people locked down? I bet they'd want that more.

China's GDP is fiction. It has always been fiction. It is a running joke, actually.

No, you try to argue an issue that is not being discussed.

Oh, we should follow the model of Saint Helena---which isn't even a country! And Niger---6% of its population is vaccinated and the government discourages its people from going to the hospital--sounds like they are doing a great job of zero covid! Well researched!

In deahts per million China has 3.62, but it hides the actual number by reporting only deaths that do not have any other condition,

Let's see a verifiable source for this "claim."--even though it is off topic.

At the same time, the US, and New Zealand for example are accused of not reporting the actual numbers of covid infections (which is the point I initially made).

No, you try to argue an issue that is not being discussed.

You brought that issue, and by replying you are discussing it.

The link clearly proves China do not have the lowest rates as you mistakenly believed, that has been proved.

It is also widely reported how China fail to report their deaths in the same way as the rest of the world does.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/20/world/asia/covid-shanghai-china-deaths.html (here is the opinion of a professor of epidemiology in Oxford about it)

Neither the US nor New Zealand have been reported to hide more than 90% of the deaths attributable to COVID, a comparison can then only be done with total numbers or (since this information is being hidden by China) by the subset of deaths where no other disease can be found.

So I am not discussing the issue by bringing it, but I am discussing it by replying to it?

Beautiful!

No, that is wrong and you know it. Just trolling on your part.

Yep, an opinion. Just as there are opinions of the US and New Zealand under-reporting Covid infections.

Neither the US nor New Zealand have been reported to hide more than 90% of the deaths attributable to COVID, a comparison can then only be done with total numbers or (since this information is being hidden by China) by the subset of deaths where no other disease can be found.

Off-topic, and non-verifiable source; the point is Covid infections. Try and stay on point.

If you argue about something you are discussing it, specially when you bring it on the first place to the conversation. China's economy has been stunted by their response to the pandemic, this could have been avoided by following scientific recommendations like those of the WHO (between other experts) that clearly have said the measures are unsustainable. This have made necessary measures like the ones listed in the article to solve the issue, thus trying to solve a problem that could have been avoided in the first place with better responses.

No, that is wrong and you know it. Just trolling on your part.

The source is there for anybody to confirm.

Yep, an opinion. Just as there are opinions of the US and New Zealand under-reporting Covid infections.

A professional opinion supported by official information that proves it is correct, can you demonstrate this professor is wrong?

Also when the argument is that there is no accusation against US or New Zealand hiding deaths in the same way that means not having a source proves the argument. The point is not infections but the burden to the health services and deaths, having asymptomatic infections is not an issue.

zero-covid strategy has been a disaster - blue collar migrant workers sleeping on the streets in Shanghai cause if they went home, they would be sealed off and could not return to work...

the zero-covid strategy was so badly handled that there are speculation Xi may not return as leader for the 3rd term

China is the last major economy bolted to a zero-COVID strategy of mass testing and tough lockdowns to stamp out infections.

And is doing the best out of all major countries to limit covid infections, and as a result, covid related deaths.

Economically, its GDP this first quarter was higher than predicted.

China's economy has been stunted by their response to the pandemic, this could have been avoided by following scientific recommendations

Not according to actual facts.

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/04/18/china-economy-q1-gdp-beats-expectations-to-grow-4point8percent-yoy.html

Incredible success by this country.

People want to criticize the government's approach, but unless you come from Burundi, no other country in the world is limiting Covid infections like China.

Even Hong Kong is having great success. Fewer infections the other day than in the country of New Zealand, which has a smaller population.

The only downfall being you have to live under the oppressive thumb of the CCP.

Do you think countries should become authoritarian in an effort to stamp out covid? You sure seem to imply that a lot. If that's not what you think, what exactly is it? You always go on about CCP, but you don't actually state your point.

Covid Zero will destroy the Chinese economy. Tax breaks won't help. Insulate your supply chains as best you can and stockpile anything you need to. It's going to be brutal.

Destroying your economy and destabilising your society for a variant that is no worse than flu is nuts.

If however, you think China is doing the right thing, have the courage of your convictions and move there.

Covid Zero will destroy the Chinese economy. Tax breaks won't help. Insulate your supply chains as best you can and stockpile anything you need to. It's going to be brutal.

But it hasn't destroyed China's economy. And really, what is meant by destroy? Inflation like the US and Japan are experiencing? The recession New Zealand went through?

Destroying your economy and destabilising your society for a variant that is no worse than flu is nuts.

If however, you think China is doing the right thing, have the courage of your convictions and move there.

Well, as noted, China's GDP grew beyond expectations this first quarter. If you have statistical data showing China's economy is being destroyed, let's see it.

Why would I move to China because I think they are doing the right thing? If I thought three countries were doing the right thing, would you suggest I move to all three?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Not according to actual facts.

The article you are commenting on explicitly says so. Infection by themselves are not a measure of success because the risk from them can be controlled, having less infections but more deaths means the approach is not only hurting the economy but also the public health, higher cost, lower benefits.

Well, as noted, China's GDP grew beyond expectations this first quarter

Expectations that have been importantly lowered because of how they manage the pandemic.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-05-24/ubs-jp-morgan-cut-china-2022-growth-forecasts-on-covid-zero.

Not having an exit strategy (and the WHO clearly expressing it so) means Chinese economy will decelerate more, while countries with better policies not.

The only positive take on this article has to

be the lower taxation on some purchases being introduced.

However, the zero Covid policy and the mass PPE wearing seems to be unnecessary.

It is difficult to see the case for continuing lockdowns or mask wearing.

I cite the UK as an example where mask wearing and quarantining has given away to more normality and where cases are presently dropping.

It could be that most of the population have developed a resistance to the present virus and the variants are not a cause for concern.

The present Omicron variant or subsequent mutations are similarly not causing hospital overcrowding and businesses in Japan are not taking customers’ temperatures as was the case several months ago.

China seems to be completely illogical in its present actions
