"...bicycles work just fine..."

Not when it rains.

Or you have passengers, or luggage, or shopping bags, or if you're a taxi, or a bus...

A cycle isn't a universal answer.

In most parts of the US, public transport is terrible, hence people need a car. Not everywhere is like Tokyo.

Vast majority of people in cities do not need a car, yet they insist in owning one as a kind of status symbol.

I would love an electric car but have petrol engine cars. When I was young my rally cars has a radiator, polished head and twin carbs with extractors. I and my poor dad always repaired. It was basic. Now one of my cars has turbo, fuel injection, the other fuel injection. I don’t regonised anything. The electrics are a nightmare and both cars have problems with the tv. A new TV is quoted at ¥110,000 x 2. I am told it’s because of COVID-19 and distribution problems with chips. Because of the complicated electrical problems, my battery dies a lot. To fix the electricity problems I have to wait two months for parts. No tv and always battery charger leads. Ever driven a car without TV? Impossible.

I wish I could use a bicycle, but there are pretty big mountains here.

Time to dust off the blueprints for the old 1970's muscle cars that just had carburetors. They out to just make those again. I wouldn't mind a new 1972 Chevelle Super Sport.

1972 BMW Bavaria. Forest green tan interior. Twin carburetors. Those were the days.

Excellent, that's why my five year old car is practically still worth what I bought it for.

I'll sell it right before coming back to Japan

On a related note, cars these days are way too expensive.

Can get anything new that's fun to drive for under $30,000.

bicycles work just fine but the cities are not designed for anything else except cars. USA and other car centric nations are never going to change until they have to.

Meanwhile, fun to see Paris ditching the car and incorporating bicycles into their infrastructure. Go check out Not Just Bikes on Youtube, there are short clips there. After a few about Amsterdam you'll be wanting to move to Europe where they are designing for human beings!

Japan with its mixed zoning could more easily shift to human and bike centric designs, and even more trains, if that's even possible :D

No matter where you are by increasing transportation options this removed the requirement to drive. And for those that need to drive then it removes those from the road who want to use other options.

So let the chips fall where they may.

I'm assuming you're joking.

The topics: Chip Shortage is misleading. Chips are over-supply and many manufacturers have piles of stock, e.g. Samsung has cut chip orders for the next three months.

What makes you think so?

Paying for gas on 8mpg would suck, but it would be worth it to burn out at every green light and look at the blue smoke in the rear view mirror.

Or you have passengers

How many passengers do you see on bicycles ?

Electric cars actually pre-date petrol (gasoline) cars. The chips aren't necessary. They can work around and still give 200 "mpg". The reason is the car companies don't want to invest and workaround, they'd rather just wait it out.

Wow. Truth gets a -2 vote. Wasnt political, it was a fact. Research it.
