I love Hello Kitty stores and always go inside when I see one. They surely provide dreams, I can imagine myself being a kid again figuring out what accessories to buy for my Kitty. They take away the problems and pains for a while. Sure, it is nothing any man could ever understand. Just looking at a Hello Kitty doll gives you smiles.

When I was knocking about with 19-year-old girls (wipes tear from rheumy eye) if you asked then who they're a fan of, they'd say Maya Angelou, or Naomi Wolf, or Tori Amos for Gawd's sake.

Yes, because being a fan of Tori Amos clearly qualifies one for medical or law school in a way that liking Hello Kitty does not. Enjoying Hello Kitty only comes with its own set of ridiculous assumptions about a person in your own mind. Get over yourself.

Ivan, you're telling a 19 year old girl to grow up? Back in my country teenage girls didn't have Disney or Hello Kitty products but they were still immature and shallow as $%!#

“We believe that our stores should not only sell goods but also offer dreams,”

What does that mean? "Ah, good afternoon, my good man. I'd like a pound of tomatoes, four candles and twenty Capstan, please. Oh, and do you have a dream in which myself and three of the Pussycat Dolls find ourselves on a large black bed with a bucket of baby oil? Splendid. Good day to you."

" I’m a fan of Kitty. She is so cute,” said 19-year-old student Manami Kubo. Whom we can safely assume will not be conducting surgical procedures or addressing the United Nations at any point in her squeaking, coddled life.

I agree TRex. Gave you a thumbs up. Wish I could give you ten.

You too Ivan. You posted one of the best lines of 2011

I always wondered what Hello Kitty's "Hello" meant. Does it just mean konnichiwa?

I always wondered what Hello Kitty's "Hello" meant. Does it just mean konnichiwa? It's a standard generic greeting amongst English speakers.

"A life-sized version of the cat"

What does this mean? Cat sized?

They missed an opportunity - how cool would it have been to have a life-size Hello Kitty sharing the DJ booth with Deadmau5?

When I was young teenage girls read Maya Angelou while sitting on their Hello Kitty sheets and listened to Tori Amos on the DJ Hello Kitty mix.

Is it more acceptable to like Hello Kitty if DJ Hello Kitty plays, say, Miles Davis?

I think escaping into the world of fantasy and cartoon childishness by Japanese adults is a form of retaliation. To me, it's an angry, passive aggressive swipe at the 'adult' world, which they see as cold and unforgiving. Wearing pink and adorning their clothes with kid's characters is a massive 'F YOU' to the world. Quite punk actually.

I do not know if I l love Hello Kitty, Kitty chan more or Doraemon, but I know my little daughter is crazy about Kitty chan, that is her Japanese name, and I would like to take my little 3 year old to see Kitty chan there in action in Shibuya!

Why thank you, Japan Gal.

But seriously - that girl is 19. And she is "a fan" of this infantile doodle. What has it ever done? At least other cartoon characters chase Road Runner or solve mysteries. This scrawl does nothing. Ever. And is a rip-off of an different infantile doodle - Miffy - who at least does things to entertain two-year-olds. This does nothing.

When I was knocking about with 19-year-old girls (wipes tear from rheumy eye) if you asked then who they're a fan of, they'd say Maya Angelou, or Naomi Wolf, or Tori Amos for Gawd's sake. Yet these people, with a straight face and no hint of embarrassment, can declare themselves to be fans of this trite garbage?

And then they wonder why they never get respect? Why don't these people grow up?

Maybe so, but they were at least aspiring to be treated like adults, though, surely? Miss Kubo seems perfectly happy to present the intellectual capacity and admirable independence of spirit of a four-year-old child.

A nineteen-year-old id old enough to vote in many countries. There should be more going on than doodles and pinkness.

"Japanese teenagers crowded a new Hello Kitty themed store in"

Can't say that I'm surprised, as I see them walking about with toy bears, rabbits and other animals on their bags. I never understood this ridiculous phenomenon and never will. It's a dumb stuffed toy with headphones that cost a slave labourer in china 10 cents to make. These kids will waste their money on any fantasy nonsense.

When I was young teenage girls read Maya Angelou while sitting on their Hello Kitty sheets and listened to Tori Amos on the DJ Hello Kitty mix.

And they were able to discern between the two. Angelou was inspirational (I hope) and the bedspread was a bedspread. An attempt had been made to grow up and see the world through the eyes of an adult. For many of these squeaking morons, four years old is all they want to be.
