Japan imports millions of dollars worth of Christmas trees every year.

The Christmas tree industry is actually a huge waste of valuable farmland that could be better used producing food.

Using only seasonal labor, it employs very few. The amounts of herbicides, fungicides, and other chemicals are detrimental to bees, as well as exposing children to significant traces of chemicals in their own home.

There are many ways to celebrate the spirit of Christmas, a tree is not worth the trouble.

Yeah always thought Christmas trees were a waste but I do enjoy the smell of pine though. Fake trees on the other hand are at least reusable

As if USA did not have enough forests...

It is just a business.

I buy it smaller if need be.

Where do you get that from? I've tried looking for data on Christmas tree imports to Japan on google but can't find anything.

I can't imagine Japan imports many trees.

A) most people don't have a tree here and of the few that do the overwhelming majority would be buying artificial ones.

B) the number of outlets that sell real trees is thus extremely limited, anywhere outside major cities its basically impossible and even in major cities its....almost impossible.

C) Of the few real trees that are sold, I can't imagine many having been imported as opposed to grown locally simply due to both the fact that the cost of shipping one is more than the tree is worth, and that the trees would not be able to survive a long ocean voyage.

The biggest travesty is people buying these trees, and then throwing them out right after the Xmas season. They could be replanted somewhere.

Is there a benefit to replanting a dead tree?

The first year we had a house of our own, I bought a lovely natural Christmas tree, so big it had to go in the floor, decorated it, it was gorgeous.

Then the dog started pooping and vomiting pine needles.

Ever since then we've had an artificial tree.

As we have a dog, entirely agree with Cleo.

I still use the nice fake one I bought in 1988 (and the same lights!). Single use fir tree versus multi use plastic. Hmmm which is more environmentally friendly?

Sadly don’t have a Yule log either, but then I don’t live in Heorot either (oh for a mead hall!).

Real trees are lovely, and if you get a rooted one can be used from year to year if looked after, what I grew up with and fondly remembered but I must admit they are a lot more bother and as most are cut, they are a waste.

I'm buying the biggest real tree I can find. It's only a once a year thing. Why not?
