The lack of female mentorship might be one of the biggest barriers facing women in the Japanese workforce affecting potential success.

I know of quite a few women who DIDNT want the positions of managers, in a number of different companies, due to the fact that in their positions, while they received a small bump in pay, the work load increased dramatically, and more importantly, they were no longer allowed to claim overtime.

I agree. Not just with women, but men as well. Managerial positions are horrible because they pay doesn’t match the workload. Especially when you were a base level employee. But if you can make it past the initial managerial posts, then the bonuses become better.
While they may not have a lot of role models to look up to, they have the opportunity to become trendsetters and that is a better thing.
This comes down to knowing your employees and learning how to motivate them. I don’t respond to scolding and become combative.

Promote someone because they have earned it. Why is that so hard to do?
This is what happens when you promote a woman, JUST BECAUSE she's a female and fills the quota for diversity.
Promote the woman because she is ready to go and has shown her leadership skills. This goes for men and minorities as well.
Never mind their sex, race, or whatever. Focus on their abilities and intellect.
On the other hand, this is still better than nepotism I suppose.

Because far, far, too often here, promotions are handed out according to seniority and NOT based upon merit.
Once you get to a certain age you are "expected" to be at a managerial rank. Hell my boss often times bitches at me because my "pay-grade" is higher than many people who have more seniority over me, and she thinks it's unfair.
Screw her!

Because the govt announced females-in-management quotas a few years ago, and employers are under pressure to meet the targets.
Forget merit, aptitude, ambition etc., and say hello to neo-Stalinism.
