I really feel for the people i Wuhan and other cities shut down. What a bummer for their New Year holiday.

Communist China government - this Disaster (far, far more dangerous than SARS/SWINE and ME virus) has been covered up disgracefully. Tens of thousands infected already. The least you can do is release the Japanese citizens to allow them return home.

It is really sad whats happening in China with this virus spreading.

I appreciate the chinese culture, there are many beautiful places there that I would like to visit someday.

I also have chinese friends living in Japan and they are very kind people.

I hope that this virus is controlled and stop spreading soon.

Pretty sure the 10,000 of millions of Chinese on lockdown are a little more concerned than the Japanese firms. Although sure local businesses won't see it that way.

Japanese firms should not be so self centred, yes have concerns for your staff (hopefully their health not their productivity) but there are wider issues at stake.

fighto, no the Japanese residents are not a special case, they are as likely as any Chinese citizen living there to be carrying the disease and so must be treated no differently than any other. I hope the Chinese government manages this well for the benefit of all those resident in the locked down cities.

Having lived through a major disaster with little help myself, I imagine that the Japanese companies have the resources to help their staff survive at home...

Fighto...how have you determined this is more dangerous than the 3 you mention?

The fact is they are concerned. Has nothing to do with being self centered. Nowhere does it say they want transportation resumed for the Japanese.

I'm sorry, but I'm cynical as all hell when it comes to this stuff.

I don't doubt that this is an illness that I don't want to get, but I've been around long enough to know that the news media are like pigs frolicking gleefully in their own sloppy manure when these 'apocalyptic' diseases break out. I can never tell if I'm reading about an actual significant global health emergency, or if I'm just delivering the 'clicks' the news organizations are after. The line between them is as gray and hazy as the Wuhan sky.

Time will tell, I suppose. If when next week a Republican US senator says something homophobic or the wings fall off another Boeing and this Chinese coronavirus disappears like flatulence in the wind to make way for the new 'crisis', I think I'll have my answer.

We should not underestimate viruses or natural disasters. We should be prepared for the worst and hope for the best. Like war preparations, we should not be disappointed if the preparedness went unused.

Waiting for the first cruise ship case. With so many Chinese people taking cruises a matter of days before they have to lock down the entire ship, pax and crew

Yeah, this is got to be really scary for anybody who is not Chinese citizen who’s currently in Wuhan. I know I’d sure as hell would be scared. Hopefully, these people can come home really soon.

Agreed, and the villagers shouldn't underestimate the wolf pack.

But when the shepherds spend their days on the hill hollering down into the valley about the wolves, when the wolves are actually two mountain ranges away, the villagers might be forgiven for becoming somewhat complacent.

No one would ever know the truth about where this virus really comes from and how many people are already infected in China.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Just read that on average an infected person infects 2.5 others. Beginning to think that lockdown until it burns itself out is the strategy that needs to be implemented. Cancel those flights, the Olympics, etc...

If these Japanese companies were genuinely concerned they would have pulled all their employees out of there at the first hint of the outbreak but, no! Production must go on to support Japan Inc abroad. Telling people to avoid crowds in Wuhan is like telling people to avoid crowds in Tokyo.

This reminds me of the Dustin Hoffman movie, Outbreak.

It has been reported that the Wuhan government knew about the outbreak at least a month before any public announcement was made.

Unless Japanies companies had spies within the Wuhan government, there is no way they could have known about "the first hint of the outbreak."

I have also heard & read this from several places.
