More lip service. So far 2 most common reasons of why women stop working or deliberately shorten their working hours are: child care and tax brackets. Together with the notion that staying late=working hard, I don't see how they'll have more female execs if nothing changes.

My husband and I work fulltime although our net income would be higher if I work part time and he declare me as his dependent. I also have a female colleague who carefully keeps tab on her working hours so that she doesn't exceed the income bracket for dependents...she said she wants to work longer and earn more but its impossible due to present tax rules.

Time will tell.

With the current female-to-male ratio in the population at 100 to 94.8

This is the wrong ratio to look at in my opinion, better to look at ratio for new hires(or first few years) & for the lowest rung of management. See how the M\F ratio looks & then set some goals & let things work organically......

Eventually, someone will have to hold them accountable for making goals that they have no intention of completing.

We all know Japan loves to boast about goals that will never be reached.

They now have 10 years to claim their goal is something gold.

Too bad for the many women who deserve recognition through merit.

Setting a goal is different from actually doing it. Based on the timeline, that is a long time to wait for that to happen, IF it does happen. It will most likely be forgotten, especially towards the end. 30% is still a small number of female executives.

what about that in top management will be people who are actually capable of doing job not only old folks who somewhat survived in company long enough to get promoted.

age, gender, nationality regarless

based on talent, skills, etc.

So tomorrow is booked out and the next appointment available to discuss is in a decades time?

Women suppose to get kids and raise them...not go hunting and bringing food home... nature's law. Break them and get punished

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Why does it have to be a goal? It’s the same for the diet. If a person has the skills and experience to take on an executive or political role, gender should not be a part of the equation. Think about how many countries have (or have had) female PMs. Could you ever see a female PM in Japan? (Rhetorical question)

Setting a quota is bound to fail. But merit-based promotions would be a driving force for women to fill positions of power.

How about hiring the right people for the job regardless of their gender?

That would be great. But those in charge of hiring people (mostly men) frequently don't.

*The target, set by the Japan Business Federation in its growth strategy released earlier this month, *is ambitious

*"We have decided to set a target despite calls for it being *too ambitious

*"Keidanren's numerical target on female executives is extremely significant. It's as if a big mountain has moved,"*

Yet...

In 2003, the Japanese government unveiled a plan to have women occupy 30 percent of leadership positions in 2020

Am I missing something here?

More chances for women would be great but this is nonsensical PR.

Goals with no plans for achievement and no accountability are worse than useless. They are worse because they are ultimately just lies and create a prevailing culture of lying.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Yeah, sure. This will disappear as quick as Abenomics and whatever pledge he previously made about women in the workforce.

Get this diversity cancer out of japan. it ruined america, do not ruin them.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

Pie in the sky stuff as per usual.

I am a man and I think men have led us down a rediculous path for a very long time now.

I would love to see global politics dominated by women, I think the world would be a better place for it.

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

The important thing is they're opening the doors.

Let's see just how many are willing and able to come inside.

With many companies still valuing long working hours, women tend to lag behind their male colleagues ...

I guess this means the corporations will be exhorting all their managers to work less? LOL.

So, now Japan just follows the Trump style? Just talk and lie?

How about hiring the right people for the job regardless of their gender?

It used to be "By the year 2020, blah, blah, blah ..."

Few of those statements of intent became reality.

Former Prime Minister Abe promoted two women to higher positions in the government.

Both of them quit within the first year of employment.

You can try to promote more women in higher positions, but they also have a say in the decision.

How many times have we read something like this, and then read something a few months later that make excuses for the goals not being met?

Businesses have to change their board rooms, by getting rid of the chauvinist pigs that are entrenched there first

7 ( +9 / -2 )

Blah blah blah. Heard this so many times in my 25 years here

More Womenomics empty promises?
