Honda USA produces nearly all vehicle content in the USA and Canada. The 1% is content currently unable to produce / source in the USA. Now, the Acura brand is a bit different . . .
Going to be a wild ride if Mr. T does even half the things he's promising.

But the bigger problem for these Japanese car manufacturers is that many of the cars are made in Canada, or partly made in Canada and then they have to pass into the US and with Trump threatening 25% tariff on Canada, that will cause even more problems! Look up Allison Ontario, there are a lot of Japanese car makers with factories there. Every time a part goes back and forth from Canada to the US there will be the tariff!

As an unintended side effect, if cars get too expensive this might get Americans out of the habit of using cars to go the three hundred yards to the store, and onto their bicycles, which could do wonders for the obesity epidemic. Heaven knows that we have millions of people who could do with losing a few dozen pounds.

Japan doesn't have a leg to stand on when it comes to moaning about tarriffs! Talk about pot calling the kettle black.

Japan doesn't have tariffs
browny1
nishikat - Japan does in fact have tariffs across many areas.
Of course many goods are exempt and some are at low rates.
But others attract a higher rate.
Dairy products for one.

As of 2023, approximately 70% of Japanese-brand vehicles sold in the United States are manufactured within North America. They will obviously be exempt from tariffs.
But Mexican production will pose a problem for everyone. The companies that manufacture in Mexico and import into the US include GM, Ford, Stellantis, VW/Audi, BMW, Kia in addition to Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Mazda.
nishikat
Sure!
No tariffs on...
cars (including cheap Chinese EVs such as BYD), solar panels, watches, car parts, IT hardware, cheap stuff made in China, cheaper import booze compared to USA
Should I go on? do tell....
Any gaijin who thinks that Japan has high tariffs on cars would never buy a car anyway. They just hate Japan but for whatever reason they stay here (or stuck here in a miserable situation). Why stay in a country you hate so much?

I'm impressed that Nissan factory workers can have cool hair

If you want to retaliate, stick tariffs on Magnificent Seven stuff. Like AWS, Google Maps (like South Korea), Iphones. See what that does to the US stock market.

Japan should bit the bullet and speed up the off loading 1 trillion in USA treasuries. It time to rid the burden of doing business with a mob that classed Japan as a security fret to there coke dependant ( 200 Billion yearly ) fascist turning national. It is rotten political and the abuse pushed on the citizens where for the first time in the nation history where their decency earn less than their Grandparents did. They continually allow this self abuse driven by their billionaire class aided by a very well oiled legacy Media blindly thinking it is unpatriotic to question so call nation building Tarriffs. It only a matter of time the citizenship will rise up and revolt against their political leaders. Japan have to except that USA market is closing and will stay close for a generation or more.
wtfjapan
I just have to pay any customs fees. No probs for me.
and if Japan retaliates with their own tariffs, like EU Canada Mexico says theyre ready to do, then expect to pay higher custom fees from imports from the US. see tariffs go both ways
wtfjapan
hint: yes- to “encourage Japanese to buy Japanese products, just like USA wants Americans to but American by……….putting tariffs! Ta-da!)
and when those countries put tariff on 1.2 trillion in US exports, yes 100s thousands of US jobs at risk also. No more cheap Candian oil, electricity, no more cheap Mexico farm produce, prices already rising in the US. ta-da! watch markets implode, this will all be on Trump , FAFO LOL
browny1
nishikat - thank you.
As I indicated in my first post many goods are exempt or lowly rated.
And re Tariffs in Japan - please open the Japan Customs official site.
You can check the Tariffs on many goods.
Japan's Tariff Schedule as of January 1 2025 : Japan Customs

I doubt that very much.
Japanese companies have increased direct investments in the U.S., particularly in the automotive, electronics, and technology sectors over the past 10 -20 years. Japan is one of the largest foreign investors in U.S. real estate, manufacturing, and renewable energy. Of significance is the US-Japan Trade Agreement of 2019 which reduced tariffs on a wide range of goods, particularly in agriculture. Japan reduced tariffs on American beef, pork, and other agricultural products, while the U.S. lowered tariffs on certain Japanese industrial products. Also the Digital Trade Agreement of 2019 which ensured free flow of data, no localization requirements for computing facilities, and strong protections for intellectual property. The popularity of Japanese products, including food, fashion, and entertainment (anime and video games), has grown significantly in the U.S. Market over the last 10-20 years pushed by the internet and e-commerce. Japan is third behind the UK and Canada in investments in the United States. In 2022 Japan exported USD 150 billion to and imported 80 billion from the U.S. There are over 8000 Japanese owned business in the U.S. supporting over 900,000 jobs.

Japan imposes no tariffs on imported cars. That fact was clearly stated in the article.
Desert Tortoise
Obviously *not** *if there are tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico as Jupiter threatens to impose. Did you read the article?

Our two Ford products are a heck of a lot more reliable and easier to maintain than the miserable Toyota POS in our driveway. From 15 years of living with my wife's Toyotas have developed a visceral hatred of them. They are made to be easy to screw together on the assembly line but repairs are super expensive and very difficult.

That would be meaningful if Trump planned to honor the NAFTA treaty. He clearly does not plan to do so.
