Reading this I am going to "brace" my pocket book for the increase in costs that get shoved down to me!

Maybe now the Japanese will begin to conserve fuel a bit better.

Idling cars, buses and taxis might decrease if the average Taro is paying a lot more for energy use

Here in the UK our energy bills have gone up 40-50% this month, Japan brace your self!

In other words the G7 and the environmentalist are talking about the new green deal and clean energy. A smart person who has some money should start betting their money on electrical power and solar grids. This is the future . Coal at one time was a big money maker when petroleum came, coal was pushed to the back burner, and now Electrical and solar power is being pushed forward with less dependence on oil and gas. We may not like it but this is what the rich and powerful are pushing in the name of Climate control.

Excuse me but you sound incredibly selfish... What if Russia was attacking Japan? Wouldn't you be happy that other countries helps you against them? Poutine is a selfish monster who is killing innocent people, just for his own greediness and self-esteem. As much as possible, he must not receive any money that could help him to ruin other countries.

we have imposed sanctions to Russia as whitehouse have told us to do so,went for trip to Europe and made public anouncements in line with american instructions.

same time we are buying quietly gas and oil from Russia and now we need to "think" how to buy from somewhere else and "brace for changes".

if Russia will cut gas and oil to Japan right now japanese economy will go down instantly.if Russia will nationalize that plant in Sakhalin and will start to sell all production to China or other countries did not started sanctions against Russia,Japan will cry but yes that all they can do...

so welcome back to reality.Japan needs russian oil and gas to survive..put poltics away and wake up to the real world.

If and when Russian LNG supplies to Japan halts, which I personally don't think happen, certainly it might become serious challenge for Japan to resolve. City gas and electricity prices will certainly soar. Besides and with all my sympathy to the people of Hiroshima, they might struggle the most as they use special LNG ship to deliver LNG to Hatsukaichi LNG terminal and there are very few plants worldwide which could cater for such a small LNG vessel. Perhaps preparing for settlement in Russian rubles could be an intermediate solution if that would be condition for continued supplies.

All of these could have been avoided should Japanese government moderated its actions against Russia though...

Japan Inc. have no one to blame but themselves for being in this s position, since the 1930s they have known they needed to find alternative ways to generate electricity and power vehicles. Instead they chose to be reliant on the US, Russia, Iran and other nations for energy.

It's not too late, but with the same government and business running things, they will have to play a quick game of catch-up. As long as the stuck in the past mindset prevails, and progress is seen as scary by the old folks in charge and a large percent of the population, Japan will be kept in the dark, in many ways. A start would be greater conservation efforts.

For japan to step out of Russian LNG it will cost about the same or cheaper than it was to host the 2020 Olympics.

8.8% is not that much and can be easily replaced from another source.

Which other source would that be? The market is saturated, LNG can't magically appear out of nowhere..

Even if Japan is ready to pay double or triple the price, there simply isn't enough LNG sold on the market to replace the Russian gas. Stopping the gas can easily amount to instantly shutting down 10% of the economy, and then cause a domino effect of losses and bankruptcies.
