GM has enjoyed several years of strong sales, posting $11.8 billion in operating profits last year, prompting union officials to argue it is time to share the wealth with workers 

"Share"?! Haha. Sorry, that's anathema to today's free-trading, globalized neo-liberals. Sharing profits with workers tends to drive down your share price and frighten investors and maybe even reduce the salaries of your multimillionaire executives.
