Goodbye gas: Volvo to make only electric vehicles by 2030

Japanese automakers are in danger of following the footsteps of Japanese electronics industry, that is failing to keep up with paradigm shift and become irrelevant.

Japanese are way behind Europeans, GM, Koreans, and Chinese in transition to EV.

If we want to prevent large parts of the Earth from becoming uninhabitable, actions such as Volvo's are needed.

It is only a partial answer. Electric vehicles might be practical for urban commuting and shopping where one may recharge their car at home and at work. But for those of us living in rural areas that need to drive hundreds of kilometers from home for necessary shopping, medical appointments or to conduct business, an electric only car is a major obstacle. Having to sit still for half an hour or more to recharge during trips isn't going to work for most of us. It might be that hydrogen powered vehicles are a better answer for our segment of the market. There are also clean biofuels that can substitute for diesel in a diesel engine.

That often parroted slice of the debate has been fact-checked on numerous occasions and has little merit.

All factors taken into account from material sourcing, production, life running and recycling, EVs use impact the environment far less.

The only case where the 2 types come remotely close is when the sole source of power generation is from old outdated fossil fuel power plants - and even then it's a stretch.

What I think is more interesting and possibly more controversial is Volvo saying they will only sell the electric cars on line. Unlike Tesla, Volvo has an established global dealer network to sell their cars. It sounds like Volvo intends to abandon their dealers wholesale. I wonder who is going to perform warranty service on new electric Volvo's? I would be curious to read more about what Volvo's future business model looks like wrt to their dealers.

How will they create the electricity needed to charge the cars? And the energy needed to produce batteries? Sun or wind? Yeah that will be enough, for sure.. not!

Instead of putting petrol or diesel in their cars, they will use the energy that someone transformed or transferred, most likely from fosil resources.

Currently, hybrid and all EV cars are dirtier than their petrol/diesel drinking buddies. It's just people can't see beyond their cars.
