talk about a vicious circle....
The house we build it carefully designed to be naturally cooled .... no need for AC. If we can do this ourselves, why can't housing companies do it?

Quite right ifd66, the ubiquitous use of AC merely exacerbates the situation, they struggle to pump the heat outside the building so adding to the heat island effect in urban areas and massively increase energy consumption and environmental degradation. They are part of the problem, not the solution (unless you own shares in the manufacturers and retailers!).
Housbuilders world wide need to change their approach, but the won’t as they will always go for the cheapest option to maximise profit.

In many countries not even underdoing such type of heatwaves with tropical conditions, building energy rules for residential is way more demanding, even now for rather small renovations.
Japan should do much better.
