Household electricity, gas bills to rise in March

Ten electric power companies in Japan have announced a price increase in household electricity prices from March, including Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), Chubu Electric Power Co and Kansai Electric Power Co (KEPCO).

The electricity bill for an average household will increase by 283 yen per month for TEPCO, 292 yen for Chubu Electric Power Co and 55 yen for KEPCO.

The continuous price surge is due to the rise in imported fuels, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) used in thermal power plants, Sankei Shimbun reported. Additionally, electricity fees are based upon the fuel cost adjustment system, which automatically reflects the fluctuation of fuel import prices.

Under Japan’s fuel cost adjustment system, the higher costs imparted to consumers can only be 1.5 times the standard price set in advance by the respective power companies. In March, the price revision for KEPCO and Chugoku Electric Power Co will have reached its upper limit.

By adding Hokuriku Electric Power Co to the mix, the three companies will hit their upper limit in February, requiring them to apply to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to increase household electricity rates.

Moreover, four major city gas companies, including Tokyo Gas Co, will raise their utility fees from 168 to 229 yen per month from March.

don't worry everyone, Kishida has us covered - remember, he "urged" our employers to give us raises.. that will compensate for increase electric bills (sarcasm)

Raising prices in the midst of a pandemic where people have lost income and jobs and are already struggling to pay their bills? Twats.

Save your cardboard boxes, you might need them. On the bright side Spring is not long away.

At least we got the 4% wage increase coming soon right?

Kanemochi Nippon.

Remember, We are the 3rd largest economy, those increases are peanuts

and the recent rush to increase prices we have experience recently is nothing at all.

if you consider the banks are awash with cash (our savings)

Sarcasm.

Time to switch-off the giant commercial led panels and use energy for vital needs.

Hmm. So the utility bills are gonna increase (for sure) well before the (urged) increase in wages.

Is this per day? Per week? Per month? Let's assume is it per month. So my bill is 5400 yen (if it is about the household gas bill per month). It will become 5683 yen.

If this is all they are able to increase prices by, it shows how little leeway they actually have. Proof that your average household is struggling WAY more than authorities are letting on (as per usual).

So, what else is new? They give us tons of sympathetic excuses for the rise of cost, but executives' salaries, bonuses and pensions seem to go up, too.

That's because our private-sector employers do NOT have us covered.

The supply chains crises are getting worse for Japan.

My friends and contact overseas are reporting considerably larger impacts, like car prices through the roof and double digit inflation for food.

283 Yen pm? In the UK our power bills are expected to double this year, despite having oil and gas reserves in the North Sea and lots of wind farms. Maybe our price rises are artificial and just to make us use less.

Price increases in Japan are tiny compared to the RotW. You should be sending your energy suppliers bunches of flowers.

Energy prices are increasing globally not just in Japan. Prices across the board are increasing, this actually is not historically unusual, just that we have enjoyed a long period of low or negative inflation so there are several generations who have never experienced it, but this period has been an historical anomaly. Get used to it, I doubt it is going away.

Basically stable prices are better for both people and the economy (but not for governments and the Finance industry) but that is not achievable with fiat currency.
