India weighs Japan's next-generation bullet train for high-speed rail

India is considering adopting the next-generation shinkansen bullet train being developed by East Japan Railway Co for a high-speed rail project underway in the western region, sources familiar with bilateral relations said Monday.

The E10 series trains are expected to begin operations in Japan on the Tohoku line, which connects Tokyo with the country's northeastern area, in the fiscal year starting April 2030, according to the operator, known as JR East.

India's bullet train project covers a distance of around 500 kilometers between the western cities of Ahmedabad and Mumbai, with a planned travel time of about two hours. Symbolizing Japan-India cooperation, the initiative will feature Japan's shinkansen system.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held in 2017, and the original goal was to open the line in 2023. Land acquisition, however, has been delayed in the face of opposition from local residents, pushing back the timeline.

The maximum speed of the E10 series train is 320 km per hour. JR East emphasized its high level of safety, saying the technology has been repeatedly tested using new prototype trains developed for the next generation of shinkansen.

You have people on Indian trains packed like sardines and have 10 of thousands get injured from unsafe transportation practices

They will ask for a lot of “demos” and documentation and then steal the technology like China did.

6 years for 500 km? Even with current 2030 there might be another delay.

Good for Japan..

Good for India..

Meanwhile US has more than 15 years trying to build with Japan's help at least one high speed train line but it was impossible..

A underdeveloped country that relays only on cars every time people run out of milk and eggs..

LOOOOOL

It's a vanity project for Modi which will connect his home state with India's financial capital.

The 2 cities are already well connected though. By the time this gets completed Modi will be long gone.

Indian social media reported on this many months ago but the entire left wing chorused that it was obviously fake news.

California didn't contract with a Japanese company. They should have. The trains will come from Alstom and Siemens. The route is being constructed by I believe Tudor Saliba. Public contracts have to go to the lowest qualified bidder. Add in multiple land disputes, counties trying to prevent it, disputes over the route and it has taken much longer than it should have.

Hey, California CAN actually do something with trains. The SF Bay Area CalTrain system actually moved from diesel to electric locomotives in the year 2024! (using German or Swiss technology, I can't remember which one).
