What could possibli go wrong with eliminating the anchor stores in all of America's malls?

Mall stores are overpriced. The problem for the malls is that the anchor stores are about the only places in a mall I would bother shopping but those big anchor store chains have been too slow to innovate and find new customers. Sears with their outstanding Craftsman and Kenmore product lines and their massive catalog that sold just about everything imaginable via mail order should have become what Amazon is., but stodgy and unimaginative management let Amazon take their business before they could realize what was happening to them.

It's the death of a whole culture is the problem. Maybe boutique stores and no communal spaces are the future but it doesn't seem like a positive to me.
