JAL to offer higher quality coffee on domestic flights

Coffee specialist Yoshiaki Kawashima, representative director of coffee company Mi Cafeto, has joined forces with Japan Airlines to bring a better quality coffee to its domestic flights. The airline started selling the new coffee, dubbed "Kodawari no Ice Coffee," on domestic routes on Thursday.

JAL said the coffee is part of its campaign to stress high quality service in an attempt to restyle the image of short-haul travel.

"to restyle the image... " for bad? cheap service will hardly make any impact on JAL business.

Neither will cheap ice coffee....

If it is not ¥0 then it is not cheap.

Would be interesting to see their arguments against the rising cheap airlines business.

Is this for the people who can't go without "better quality coffee" for the 1 or 2 hours they spend on a domestic flight?

Don't fly JAL......even with better coffee! Too price..and now that I know the coffee was bad, no regret!

I know why they are upgrading their coffee. So you can wake up and realize you are on the wrong flight, wrong carrier.

You should've booked a flight on SkyMark or StarFlyer so you can take your kid to TDL or USJ when you get in town.

Forget the coffee. I'd rather save 10,000 yen so I can eat some safe beef once I get off the plane.

Personally i,ve always been a fan of the "consomme soup" I think that,s JALS flagship food!!

Of all the problems that plague JAL, this is the problem they address? Reminds me of Kerr's Dogs and Demons.

Don't forget the yuzu drink ;)

I stopped using JAL over a year ago and do all my domestic travel with ANA.

It is ridiculous that you have to pay for a cup of coffee on flights. That makes me not fly an airline.

Ha ha ha ha! This is funny news! Ha ha ha ha!

What about JAL's international flights? Are they still going to serve so-so quality coffee on their international flights?

The ice coffee in the photo looks like there's no cream in it. Without any cream in it, it's not going to taste good, even if it has sugar in it.

Much rather have high quality fruit juice...but this would be way too expensive for them.

I would jump into the ocean and swim before flying in JAL.

@globalwatcher.... why's that?

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

This is an example of why large Japanese companies just don't get it. If they really think serving coffee is going to influence somebody's decision on what airline to fly, they deserve to go bankrupt and out of business.

That's the guy who puts coffee beans in champagne bottles.... His company (Mi Cafeto) has only operated for 3 years.

Hippo,JAL overbooked seats and dumped me at Copenagen . I missed my friends who were waiting at Heathrow on the way to Madrid. These friends spoke no Spanish and no English. What was a mess!!.

I don't think "high quality service" means selling expensive coffee, even the cheapskate airlines do that. I don't drink coffee anyway, so tough luck JAL.

global..... every single airline overbooks at one point or another.

picture this..forget the coffee...the flight attendants are in maid costumes..now thats what I'm talking about !!

Unless it was imported from Europe then its not worth it..

How about they start serving/selling beer again on flights. Seriously WTF? At least for business class.

That's why I always take the Shinkansen; even from Fukuoka to Tokyo. There's more to travel than speed and convenience :)

Not a lot of choice if you live in Okinawa...

But seriously how much do they save by not taking a case of beer on a flight? At 500 yen a beer they are still making a good markup.

Screw the coffee! Start lowering prices!!

Stay on topic please.

Serve high quality beer and high quality coffe! That would make both the wife and I happy. (I wouldn't even complain much over haposhyu)

The kids still go nuts over the consume/bullion soup.

Awww... well, that'll make up for the jack-up in ticket costs, the cut-backs in staff and maintenance, and the tripling of the fuel surcharge! So they're going to make the 'free' coffee a little better, eh?

How about having beer on domestic flights, that is more relaxing that coffee.
