JAL to raise fuel surcharges from Oct 1

Japan Airlines will raise fuel surcharges on its international airfares by 500 to 5,000 yen for one-way tickets to be issued on and after Oct 1.

The margin of the hike would have been a maximum of 16,000 yen if the current fuel price uptrend is taken into account. But JAL decided to curb the surcharge increase so as not to scare off customers, company officials said.

All Nippon Airways announced a similar fuel surcharge hike on Aug 18.

Oil prices dropping but JAL & ANA raising fuel surcharges - typical grab the money while they can. Did the surcharges ever go down after the big rise in oil prices and then dropped substantially - nope! But now with a small fluctuation in oil prices, JAL & ANA take it upon themselves to grab more money. Greedy, blood sucking!

I remember once, a long while ago, that ANA did drop their surcharges by about 1000 yen or so.

My surcharge was ¥70,000 this summer.

My surcharge was ¥70,000 this summer.

My one's only half that amount (to Europe). You must have chosen the wrong airline.

C'mon, how many of you use JAL or ANA anyway? You have to watch Northwest, United and KAL economy cattle rates start rising before it starts to hurt too bad. I am a not-a-frequent-flyer myself and the higher prices just give me a good excuse to become a "not-a-flyer".

I went Europe using JAL this summer. The ticket was 210,000, and 67,000 was the surcharge. However, other carriers (Lufthansa, KLM, AirFrance and so on) were at 21~25,000, including surcharge. And I like the service on JAL much better. American carriers? You must be joking

sorry, make that 210~250,000

Won't concern me because I don't fly with rip-off airlines.

The term states that fuel surcharges are subject to changes. You are not spared even if you confirmed your ticket earlier on.

The surcharges are also based on retroactive 3-month price ranges for jet fuel, so any major drop in fuel prices now (specifically, the wholesale price of jet fuel on the Singapore exchange) would not be reflected in lower fuel surcharges until the next round of adjustments in January.

If the carriers were more open and honest about how the surcharges are calculated and applied, I think they would have fewer worries about consumer backlash.

Incredibly, people will pay it.

I flew JAL.

Does JAL also charge for things that used to be free, like refreshments and banket and pillow, as the U.S. airlines do now?

not at all, I had 5 (little) bottles of wine :)

Its good to know that drinks are STILL free on asian and european airlines, flew NW to manila, had to fork out 5bucks for a beer , it also took them eyons to serve u food..it was my first and last asian short-haul flight with NW..Totally ridiculous. Since the price per barrel has gone down, the charges should follow suit.....i guess not!!! airline companies just found a new way to up the fares. FUEL SURCHARGES
