Global oil prices have been steadily declining the past year from a June 2022 high of $116/bl to now $79/bl.

The blame for the cost

here can be directly attributed to the govts economic and fiscal policies which

have rendered the value of the ¥ to way below

any sense of parity.

The low ¥ has created a ton of

misery for many businesses - esp small and local - and for ordinary citizens on

basic incomes.

Big Oil is making record profits.

The government sees higher prices as a victory no matter the cost, the higher the price the more revenue from 消費税,very simple a sales tax rise without having to raise the sales tax.

Japan's prices are nearly the same as in Canada, and Canada pumps it from its own ground while Canadians tend to drive a lot more than Japanese.

Crude oil is currently only a little higher than five years ago. We can thank corporate greed and globalization for the exorbitant pump prices and weird market distortions that are hurting consumers so badly. Subsidies are needed to protect us from these ravages.

Japan isn't at war with anybody in the Middle East, hasn't been in any war for nearly 80 years. So what's the excuse here?

what households need here is a temporary lowering of consumption tax on essential items and an income tax cut to give households some breathing space.

Windfall taxes on Big Oil when profits are very high.

Yet the tax on a litre of gasoline is 53,8 yen. The government is robbing its citizen's blind and then pretending to be altruistic by giving a subsidy (to oil distributor's).

Oh well, what else is new?

Expect it to be Yen 200 in September.

In addition, the price for milk, yohurt, cheese and more products increased on 1 August.

Another roughly 40.000 products will follow next month.

As long as those sitting in the local and national governments got it made .... they don't care about you and me!

I think all subsidies should be stopped as it does not encourage people and businesses to really reflect on their consumption and reduce it. A few years back, such a price was making the headline due to a very high oil price, but now the exchange rate has more impacted the price increase than the oil price itself. The J news do not report anything, focusing on the heat and temperatures. Oil price is around 80 dollars now.

With a price at 200yens, behavior will change.

The high price at the pump has nothing to do with "corporate greed" or any such socialist mumbo-jumbo, but it has EVERYTHING to do with MMT driving Japan's foolish loose-money policy. This foolishness is what has led directly to the sharply weakened yen. The result of THAT is the sharply increased real cost of imported goods(essentially ALL of Japan's energy sources!). Abenomics eventual predicted effect is having impacts now, further impoverishing the proletariat.

The J-Gov could ease the boot on the people's necks by REDUCING TAXES, especially the ludicrous fuels taxes!

Big oil are gangsters like most of those corporations. Out to make the max profit for shareholders, ethics and morality don’t come into the equation you see. That’s why the world is like this

They don't want to give money to fascist Russia. At least Saudi Arabia keeps its crazy at home.

Except when they're murdering journalists in Turkey.

Errrm, don't we have a trade surplus? Let's use this to help subsidize for the people, be it by lowering gas prices or by lowering electricity bill. Keeping at least one of these lowered helps the entire populace, including businesses.

Gas as in gasoline or ideally, petrol.

Why "ideally petrol"? Because you call it that? The terms gasoline and petrol are used fairly equally around the world, with perhaps gasoline being a tad more popular. (N & S America, plus parts of Europe and Africa, and of course, Japan. While petrol is used mostly by the UK and its former colonies.)

Why not "ideally benzene", which is used in most of Europe, and much of Africa?

It's lazy journalism not to differentiate in the headline between gasoline and the gas which comes from bottles or the main supply line.

Not lazy, as "gas", as confusing as it sometimes is, is the standard abbreviation for "gasoline", which is the term used in Japan, the focus of this site and this article.

You have to open and start reading the article before finding out just what is being discussed.

You had to do that. I, and I assume many others, knew exactly what it was referring to. The photo of the fuel nozzle in the automobile fuel inlet was a major clue.

Physical activity is better for your health and the environment and helps prevent obesity and health issues.
