Makes lots of sense, traditional parallel lines of R&D to arrive at the same results are wasteful.

Just have one car company for all of japan and have a magrav train line from Tokyo to Nagoya.

Not always. When the US tightened up emissions requirements for large diesel powered trucks the Cummins Engine Company went off in a different direction than Detroit and Caterpillar did. The result is Cummins diesels solved some of their emissions problems in the combustion chamber and didn't need all of the downstream emissions control equipment found on trucks running Caterpillar and Detroit engines. This had benefits in terms of lower maintenance requirements and cost.
