Nope. They are utterly serious. So is the international maritime industry. A company called Reaction Engines is working on an ammonia fueled aviation engine in conjunction with Britain's Science and Technology Facilities Council and several big firms including MAN Diesel are working on ammonia fueled versions of existing big diesel engines for ocean going ships as well as ammonia fueled fuel cells to generate electricity to drive ships through electric motors.
