Japan's total trade with China rose 17.9% year-on-year to $163.2 billion in the first half of 2011, setting a new record on a first half-year basis, according to a report by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). This figure was the second highest on a half-year basis after the $163.5 billion registered in the second half of 2010.
Japan's exports to China rose 14.3% to $78.2 billion while its imports from China rose 21.4 % to $84.9 billion. The increase in imports surpassed that of exports which was affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Japan's trade with China posted a $6.7 billion deficit, up 4.3 times year-on-year.
Japan's trade with China posted positive growth also on a monthly basis in the first half of 2011, compared to the same term in 2010. The growth was attributed to an increase in exports to China on the back of the country's continuing economic growth and rising imports from China caused by an increasing domestic demand in Japan for Chinese finished goods and parts.
The growth in Japan's trade with China was larger than that for the country's overall trade (8.0%). As a result, the share of Japan-China trade rose 0.5 points to 20.6% of Japan's total trade from 20.1% in the previous year. Of the figure, the share of Japan's exports to China set a record: reached 20.0% of the country's total exports for the first time on a first half-year basis, while the share of Japan's imports from China slightly decreased 0.4 points to 21.1% of the total imports on a year-on-year basis. China, however, remains Japan's largest trading partner in terms of imports, exports and total trade.

Ipad, Iphone, Computers, and Shoes, Clothes, Underwear and socks you have on,etc? Maybe you don't buy anything that is Made in China but most of the people in the world does and that is why China is the largest trading nation in the world.
China and Japan will be more economically linked as this trading trend continues.

There are different tiers of Chinese-made product. Some are Chinatown-only stuff, others are specced and ordered by international companies, and still yet are those high end products like by Apple that tens of millions of people rely on. Grouping Chinese products together shows a lack of understanding. Look at American automobiles. They're making a comeback and Ford is a standout but Chrysler and GM are still liable to be recalled. Even Toyota for all its ballyhooed history failed its drivers with sticky pedals and unintended acceleration. Bottomline: sweeping generalizations do not work.

Ipads are assembled in China, but designed in USA with most components coming from other countries. Clothing is more often made in vietnam, India etc. as rising costs have pushed most clothing manufaturing out of China.
But the points is Japan has a trade deficit with China, partly because China gets away with Currency manipulation on a massive scale. Something will eventually have to give in the world wide race to the bottom for currencies.

globalwatcher, you do have some good points. Instead of looking for the made in USA sticker, we in Japan should look for made in Japan. However I would rather buy something from the USA instead of China. At least the products are safe, never know about China.

@Yuri, you have read my mind. That's right. That's exactly what I am trying to tell to all Japanese business people. I am willing to pay an extra for good quality goods made in Japan. It is so hard to find Japanese products physically made in JAPAN. Japanese worker's pride is the #1 in the world and I believe in their precision works.
There are two types of consumers; one price sensitive and quality sensitive like me.
