Good for them! Why should they settle for terrible work conditions or low pay? There are always options whether we know it or not. An abusive relationship is an abusive relationship regardless of who it is.
I am making arrangements to make that move myself.

It's well known that over 50% of workers are in part time positions;hardly 'a job for life then!'

Reckless, it's not 'crap' as you so eloquently put it. It's a reality, with a twist of what you added thrown in.
In the 2 decades I've lived here, I've seen the belief in a lifetime employment system become less of a reality for most. With slow salary increases, slow promotions (if any), a growing foreign worker base and said foreigners opening the eyes and minds of JP, sentiment is shifting and shifting quickly!
I know of a handful of folks who have been in the same job for 2 or 3 or 4 decades, compared to the number of people who are no longer concerned about job-hopping.

I think this is a good development. Large Japanese companies no longer offer jobs for life; all they offer is long working hours and no pay rises. They should not be surprised when their best staff move elsewhere.
