Wonder how much hidden unemployment there is. For example, those old boys with the light sticks, if they work one week a month, are they considered employed? Also, since many jobs are 'baito' or part-time, working few hours, those must be registered as employed, no?

And how about the underemployed and/or those who stopped looking altogether? I suspect that would bring things up "a bit".....

" And if you believe that, I've got a bridge to sell you."

It gets so frustrating that they are allowed to lie like this.

If you are not looking for a job you are NOT counted in the numbers. If you worked even ONE DAY in a month. JUST ONE DAY, you are considered employed.

Those two are just for starters. The real unemployment rate is around 10 - 12%

Household spending is hard to increase when people have to worry about fuel and electricity costs. Now that it is getting warmer, there may be a chance that people will feel like spending a bit more cash while shopping rather than keeping it in their banks for electricity and gas.

I am one of those people...now that the weather is decent enough to ride my bike to work (22km return), I can save my gas money and use it to buy household items. Hopefully more will do the same.

The "standstill" is just a pause before the impending long, slow slide staring Japan Inc. square in the face.

And yet the gov't is intent on raising the consumption tax. Incredible...
